NASCAR Cup series to race under one brand–New track this week as drivers race the roads in Indianapolis. Qualifying has not been a regular fixture in the Cup since the pandemic, so will it be this weekend?
NASCAR moves away from the oval
It has been played on the famous 2.5-mile oval since the Cup Series began in Indianapolis in 1994.
Known as the “Brickyard 400,” it became one of four crown jewel events in the NASCAR calendar.
But for 2021, NASCAR has opted to move away from the oval in favor of a 14-turn, 2.4-mile road track.
It’s not a popular move among Cup racers lamenting the history of not running on the oval and losing.

“We still wanted to run the oval for historical reasons,” explains Richard Childress Racing’s Austin Dillon.
“Legacy, everyone wants a real brickyard trophy.
“I don’t think if you win there this weekend, it’s not going to be like a win on the Oval.”
Regardless, 39 drivers will try to win the inaugural Cup on the road circuit.
Cody Ware will be the only driver to attempt double duty, going head-to-head with the IndyCar series for the first time as a cup race.
Cup practice and qualifying
Practice and qualifying have been the exception, not the rule, in 2020 as the first step back to racing in the wake of the pandemic.
Practice and qualifying will continue as usual for major events such as the Daytona 500, Coca-Cola 600 and the championship-determining final.
The grid positions for the rest of the races are determined by a formula, taking into account the driver’s finish position and the fastest lap of the previous race.
The series bosses plan that each new track for the 2021 calendar will include practice and qualifying sessions.
Since the Indy Road course is new to NASCAR, the venue will enjoy a practice session before qualifying ahead of Sunday’s race.
Qualifying takes place on Sunday at 09:05AM ET after the previous night’s IndyCar race.
match start time
With only three rounds remaining in the regular season before the playoffs begin, time is running out for drivers to secure their spots.
Of the 16 spots available for the playoffs, 13 spots are currently full.
Current combined points leader Danny Hamlin will likely be successful in points, but a second career win will ease the nerves of the #11 Joe Gibbs machine.
The game is scheduled to begin at 1:13 p.m. ET on Sunday and will be broadcast live on NBC.
For UK viewers it will be 18:13pm.
