Age of Disaster Review – Spotlight
This is an honest review of Hyrule Warriors: Age Of Calamity. This game will finally satisfy an unfulfilled craving for anyone who has played The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (BOTW).
For those of you committed enough to playing BOTW, it’s a safe bet that you’ll be bitten by this bug and want more.
Hyrule Warriors: Age Of Calamity takes us back Catastrophe We hear a lot in BOTW. But, like all previous Hyrule Warrior games, this is Zelda from Dynasty Warriors’ perspective.
The game proved so popular that it shipped 3 million units in the first four days of its November release.
Like previous Hyrule Warriors games, Age Of Calamity mixes the hack and slash from Koei Tecmo’s Dynasty Warriors series with the setting, characters and other elements of Nintendo’s Zelda series.
Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity review
Unlike Zelda, where you’re primarily exploring a beautiful kingdom alone, Age of Calamity’s basic gameplay pits you in massive battles while completing objectives and strategic elements such as capturing bases and commanding troops.
The cavalry came, and wrongly, it went.
In addition to retaining the combat, crafting and weapon upgrade systems of Hyrule Warriors, the game combines environmental puzzle solving and the use of BOTW’s Sheikah Slate tools and paragliders.
Players can level up their characters, complete quests and challenges, use resources to enter new areas, craft weapons and cook food.
The good news is that weapons in this game don’t break down over time, unlike BOTW. The game map is similar to the classic Nintendo games in history. Players can choose levels and use Sheikah Tower to explore between areas.
Choose from 18 characters
There are 18 playable characters. Of these, 14 are earned during the main storyline, and 4 are unlocked by completing side quests.
But when it comes to the characters you can control, what excites me the most is that you can also control giant mythical beasts. This allows you to destroy a large number of enemies.
There are 18 playable characters.
For those who prefer amiibo characters, Calamity is also compatible with the characters from the four champions re-released in the game.
USP makes it the best
Any excuse to revisit BOTW’s story, map, or structural elements is a good one. This is a huge USP in times of disaster. From a Hyrule Warriors perspective, it single-handedly makes it the best it can be.
Mixing up the Warriors’ hurricanes and runes is just as important, though. It provides some welcome and much-needed variety to combat. There is nothing wrong with fighting in BOTW. But this takes it to a new level.
New moments in the encapsulated story are delivered with Nintendo charm. Retellings of parts familiar to BOTW fans will also be a treat.
Small complaint: grinding
Just like in BOTW, there’s a bit of a grind in terms of quests and resources, which occasionally spoils my fun. While combat is rejuvenated by runes and flurry, it is also affected by grinding.
Some camera issues can be maddening as combat escalates to often chaotic levels. This unnecessarily increases the difficulty.
Bosses are fun to look at but sometimes offer bland and repetitive fare – soaking up your hits and accepting what may feel like an era.
Hey! come down here! Stop complaining, we have a battle to win.
Overall, though, these are minor complaints. Hyrule Warriors: Age Of Calamity takes us on a delightful journey of memories to a world we all know and love.
Hyrule is a delight to watch with its character variety, combat additions, and stunning beauty.
The best Hyrule crossover yet – but there’s a lot of untapped potential in the race to come.
Rating: 8/10
