Akaba Was the early king of the Kingdom of Dahomey, in present-day Benin, from 1685 to C.1716. King Houegbadja established the basic structure of the kingdom on the Abomey Plateau. His first child was twins Akaba and Hangbe, followed by another son of Houegbadja, who would become king of Agaja. As the eldest son, Akaba became king after Huegbaja’s death and ruled until 1716, when he died of smallpox or in battle in the Ouyme Valley. When he died, his sister Hambe became ruler and began preparations for Akaba’s eldest son, Agbo Sassa, to take the throne. In 1718, Agaga, the second eldest son from Huegbaja after Akaba, fought Agbosasa and Hombe to become the next king of Dahomey.

Oral tradition records that Akaba was the eldest son of Houegbadja and a twin sister named Hangbe. In addition, Houegbadja had a younger son named Dosu (the traditional name for the first male born after the Fon twins), who was later named Agaja. As the eldest son, Houegbadja named Akaba his heir before his death, who took over the throne in 1685 after the death of his father. In some versions, Akabane is the king who killed the chief bear Establish Dahomey’s rule over the Abomey Plateau instead of Huegbaja.
The Akbar government continued its military expansion on the Abomey Plateau and strengthened the kingdom’s centralization of power in the region. Some of his most important military activities were in the Waime River Valley. During this battle circa 1715-1716, Akaba died of smallpox, poisoning, or fighting. Due to the suddenness of his death and the young age of his heir, Edna Beh believed that his twin sister, Humbe, became the regent until Agaja forcibly replaced her and Akaba’s eldest son, Agbo Sasa, in the succession throne.
