Cheyne started out as an Aberdeen professional, signing from Shettleston’s youth team in 1925. During his time at the Pittodrie, he became an icon for the locals, and his goals helped lift the team from a regular mid-table finish to third in the final season.
Chelsea and Nimes
He joined David Calderhead’s Chelsea for a club-record £6,000 fee in 1930, but despite playing alongside other talented strikers such as Hughie Gallagher and Alex Jackson Still struggling to settle down.
He joined the French club Olympique de Nimes in 1932. He returned to Chelsea two years later, eventually leaving in 1936.
International
Chern made five appearances for Scotland, scoring four goals, including a hat-trick against Norway and a direct corner goal against England – a feat only legalised last season – against England. The final game is believed to be the start of the “Hampden Roar”: with just ten players in Scotland and less than a minute left in the game, more than 110,000 spectators let out an encouraging roar that continued long after the game. The final whistle then became a common sound in Scotland’s home games. Cheyne reportedly turned corner scoring into a specialty, a feat he accomplished twice for his club the following season.
Coaching and Management
After retiring, Cheyne took up coaching, initially winning the Southern Football League trophy at Chelmsford City. He then became Arbroath’s manager, albeit unsuccessfully.
