About Alda Noni: Italian Opera Singer (1916 – 2011)
Alda Noni (30 April 1916 – 19 May 2011) was an Italian soprano leggiero, one of the main matchmakers shortly after the war.
Born in Trieste, she initially studied vocals and piano in her hometown and completed her studies in Vienna. She debuted as Rosina in Ljubljana in 1937 and later appeared in Zagreb and Belgrade.
She sang at the Vienna State Opera from 1942 to 1946, playing Mozart, Rossini and lesser Donizetti roles such as: Susanna, Zerlina, Despina, Adina, Norina. In 1944, Richard Strauss personally selected her to sing Zerbinetta for his 80th birthday.
She sang widely in Italy, both on stage and on the radio, and was admired in operas by Cimarosa, Paisiello and Fioravanti, often with Cesare Valetti and Sesto Bruscantini. She also appeared in London in 1946 and Glyndebourne in 1949, and made her Oscar debut at the Paris Opera in 1951, after which she sang Nanetta. She retired from the stage in 1955.Her voice can be heard in many recordings made for Cetra Records in the early 1950s, especially Le cantatrici Villane, Figaro’s nose, Il matrimonio segreto, L’elisir d’amore, Don Pasquale, i quatro rusteghi.
