About Alcimachus of Apollonia: The Greek Noble
Alcimarcos of Apollonia (Greek: Ἀλκίμαχος, flourished in the 4th century BC) was a Greek nobleman of Macedonian who served as an official. During the first years of the reign of King Philip II of Macedon from 359 BC to 336 BC and his son Alexander the Great from 336 BC to 323 BC, he was an active diplomat and administrator.
Arcimarcus was the eldest of four sons of Agathocles and his wife, who may have been named Arsino. His grandfather was probably called Alcimachus, and one of his brothers was Lysimachus, one of Alexander the Great’s successors.
His father, a high-ranking nobleman, was a close friend of Philip II, who participated in Philip II’s parliament and became the darling of the court of Ajid. Alcimachus and his brothers were raised in Macedonian status; he and his brothers enjoyed a prominent position in Alexander’s circle, and Alcimachus and his brothers were educated at the court of Pella.
Two years after the Battle of Chaeronia in 338 BC, Alcimachus and Antipater were sent to Athens by Philip II, where they were named “Proxenoi” of Athens, and in a decree received honor. At some point during Philip II’s reign, Alcimachus may have acquired property in Apollonia and may have received the honor Philip II bestowed upon him. Two years later, Alcimarcos took charge of an army authorized by Alexander to “liberate” Ionia and Aeolis. When Alexander sent Arcimarcus to establish democracies in the Ionian and Aeolian cities, Alexander may have expressed some dissatisfaction with Arcimarcus’ conduct of affairs there, as he may have been Alcimarcos in the named The second letter to the Chinese. Alexander historians no longer refer to Alcimachus after Alexander’s possible displeasure with him.
With an unnamed Greek wife, Arsimachus had two sons: Arsimachus, whose grandsons were named Lysipus and Philip.
