About Albrecht von Graefe: German Politician (1868 – 1933)
👨🎤
Albrecht von Greifusually anglicized as Greve (January 1, 1868 – April 18, 1933), German landowner and right-wing politician active during the German Empire and Weimar Republic. Although he was never a member of the Nazi Party, he was an early partner of Adolf Hitler and for a time seemed to be a credible competitor leading the entire Völkisch movement.
early career
He was the son of the famous ophthalmologist Albrecht von Greif and grandson of the surgeon Carl Ferdinand von Greif, who joined the German Imperial Army as an officer in 1887. After his military service, von Greif entered politics and served as a member of parliament for the German Conservative Party from 1912 to 1918.

Von Greif returned to the Reichstag in 1920 as a member of the German National People’s Party (DNVP). A close associate of Reinhold Wulle, von Greif was the far right of the DNVP, who negotiated with Adolf Hitler as early as 1920. Between 1919 and 1920, von Grave published a series of open letters in the German press in which his racist and anti-Semitic views were attacked by the famous liberal Gustav Stresemann, Hence fame.
In 1922, von Graefe, Wulle and Wilhelm Henning broke away from the DNVP and formed their own Völkisch party, the German Völkisch Free Party (DVFP). The move comes after Henning wrote an article about Walther Rathenau that was so vitriolic that Prime Minister Joseph Voss called on his DNVP coalition partners to purge their own extremist members. Despite the split from DNVP von Graefe, he remained a member of the Reichstag and held his seat until 1928.
Allied with Nazis
As an early ally and rival of Hitler, he managed to convince Nazi party leaders that the two groups should limit themselves to certain spheres of influence, with the DVFP active in northern Germany and the Nazis active in the south. Thanks to this alliance, von Grave marched in the front row of the beer hall coup. However, he also used the fallout to form an alliance with Erich Ludendorff and used this to try to control the far right for himself. By 1924 von Graefe had negotiated with Gregor Strasser to incorporate the Nazi Party into the DVFP. Although the plan was supported by Ludendorff, Hitler rejected it in prison because he did not want to hand over leadership to von Grave or anyone else. Nonetheless, the two sides reached a formal alliance that ceased before the merger, and von Grave was a member of the imperial leadership of the resulting National Socialist Freedom Movement (NSFB).
Von Grave, however, was not a skilled leader, and he bore the brunt of the defeat of the NSFB, which won only 14 seats in the December 1924 elections, and support for the far right plummeted. The group split in 1925, resulting in von Grave and Uller reforming the DVFP and setting up a confrontation with the Nazis.
old age
Shortly after the split, von Grave was injured in a speech in Frankfurt in what was apparently an assassination attempt, when a questioner threw explosives on stage, forcing the rally to be abandoned. At a German parliamentary session in 1937, Nazi party deputy Adalbert Kimbell claimed the attack was a strike against a potentially hostile movement.Hitler in an open letter to von Grave Völkischer Beobachter On March 19, 1926, Hitler warned in it: “I was a drummer, and I will be; but I will only drum for Germany, not for you and your likes, so God bless me”. He retired from politics entirely in 1928 and died shortly after Hitler came to power.
