Gil Alberto Henriquez Gallo (July 24, 1894 – July 13, 1962) was the President of Ecuador from 1937 to 1938.
Henriquez was appointed by Federico Pace as a general in the Ecuadorian army and served as defense minister in his government. In September 1937, he overthrew Pace in a military coup. Although he was in power for less than a year, Enriquez gained a reputation as a social reformer through the 1938 Labour Code.
Enríquez is also remembered for his longstanding confrontation with the U.S.-based South American Development Corporation over the terms of its Ecuadorian concession and the wages it pays Ecuadorian employees. The company refused to comply with Enríquez’s plea to keep more of its mining operations’ profits in Ecuador and won the backing of the U.S. State Department. His grandson emigrated to the United States and graduated from the United States Naval Academy. In May 2019, Enriquez’s great-grandson, Nick Miljus, graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy as a Navy aviator, and his legacy lives on.
