He was the eldest of seven children born to porter Jakob Albert Welti-Furrer (1833-1906). In 1871, part of the Eastern Army was housed on his grandfather’s property, and watching them in action sparked his later interest in historical scenes.
After completing his primary education, he studied at the local Industrieschule, where he studied engraving with Johann Conrad Werdmüller. In 1880 he started a photography apprenticeship with his uncle Oswald Welti (1843-1932) in Lausanne, but only stayed with him for a year. In 1882 he entered the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich and was influenced by Arnold Berklin, whom he had met in 1885. After graduation, he received a grant for the arts from the generous patron Franz Rose (1854-1912).
In 1894 he met and married Emmeline Wildbolz, and they settled in the Zurich suburb of Höngg. After his father’s death, he assuaged his grief by visiting Innertkirchen and Vättis, where he created many pastel studies of nature. After that, he worked in Munich until 1908. There he befriended the writer Hermann Hesse.
In 1911, his wife died suddenly. A year later, he died at the age of 50. Hesse bought his country house in Ostermundigen near Bern.
Probably his most famous work is a fresco, District Court [de], in the Städerat meeting room at the Federal Palace. It was unfinished and was completed in 1914 by William Ballmer. In addition to his art, he designed stamps for Swiss Post.
His son Albert Jakob Welti also became an artist and writer. Popular Swiss singer/songwriter Sophie Hunger is his niece.
