Akiko Kotani (born 1940) is an American artist and art educator from Hawaii. She is currently Professor Emeritus of Art at Slippery Rock University in Butler County, Pennsylvania, where she joined in 1979.
Early life and education
Akiko Kotani was born in Waipahu, Honolulu County, Hawaii in 1940. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Hawaii in Honolulu in 1962. She later studied at the Taylor School of Art in Elkins Park, Pennsylvania, where she received her MFA in 1977.
Profession
After graduating with a bachelor’s degree, Cotani worked with a Mayan Indian weaver in Guatemala for two years. After earning a master’s degree in 1977, she joined the School of the Arts at Slippery Rock University in Butler County, Pennsylvania in 1979. She retired from the University in 2000 as Professor Emeritus of Art.
From 2008-2010, she was an adjunct professor at Koç University, Istanbul, Turkey.
Kotani’s work is held in many private, corporate and museum collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. It has been exhibited in many international venues, including the Kyoto City Museum in Japan and the Cleveland Museum of Art in Ohio.
