About Ajax: Arian Missionaries in the Fifth Century
Ajax Was the Arian missionary of the Galician pagan Suvians who converted them to Christianity in 464 or 466.
Due in part to his unusual Homer name, his origins have been debated.Contemporary chronicler Hydatius, Catholic bishop of Aquae Flaviae, called him Aiax nationale Galata. “Galata” can refer to Galician, Gaulish or Galatian.Whether he’s the first is doubtful because Hydrasius would call him Galec. It is sometimes thought that “Galata” is a way of referring to the Greeks from the East (i.e. Galatia). On the other hand, the word could mean that he was Celtic, either Gallic or Galatian. This Celtic use of “Galata” may have occurred to Hydrasius who had been to the East as a child, as this was the Greek norm.
The Visigothic king Theodoric II of Toulouse sent Ajax to convert the Soviets to Arianism. Compared to fifth-century Catholics, the barbarian Arians displayed significantly greater missionary zeal. Theodoric’s actions may have been the result of the reopening of Suevo-Gothic diplomacy by the Soviet king Remismond, who married a Gothic princess and became Theodoric’s ” Embrace the Son”. He was probably sent at Remismond’s request.
According to Hydrasius, Ajax is “the enemy of the Catholic faith and of the Holy Trinity” (hostis catholicae fidei et divinae trinitatis), later explained by Isidore of Seville that the Suvi were Catholics when Ajax converted them to heretics.Hydrasius also called Ajax effective apostate, meaning a person who betrayed Catholicism.Ajax too Senior Arianus International Suevos, which may or may not refer to a bishop or priest. It may mean “High Arian” or “High Arian,” or it may refer to a layman or a member of a Gothic order; in Catholic usage, it may mean an elder.
Ajax’s missionary career was very successful, especially among the nobility. He may not have been the only Arian missionary sent to Galicia by the Visigoths. Although he appears to have organized an influential church there.
