About Aitor Karanka: Spanish Football Association football player and manager (1973-)
Ettore Karanka Delahoz ([aiˈtoɾ kaˈɾaŋka]; born 18 September 1973) is a Spanish ex-footballer who played primarily as a centre-back (sometimes at left-back) and manager.
Aside from a brief stint in the US, the 32-year-old has only played in Spain for Athletic Bilbao and Real Madrid, where he played 275 La Liga games in 13 seasons, winning a total of six honours with the latter.
Karanka began a managerial career in the late 2000s, notably as an assistant coach at Real Madrid, and worked as his own assistant at Middlesbrough and Nottingham Forest.

Born in Vitoria Gastes in Alava, Karanka played for his hometown club Deportivo Alaves in his youth and completed his training with Basque neighbours Athletic Bilbao. In 1992 he made his debut in the latter’s reserve team, competing in Segunda División.
After the departure of Rafael Alkorta, Karanka was promoted to the main team by Jupp Heynckes in 1993. He made his La Liga debut in a 1-1 draw away at RC Celta de Vigo (90 minutes) on 7 November and played in three full seasons before he joined Real Madrid’s German coach 100 league games. 1997 (replaces Alkorta, who just moved back to Bilbao).
Karanka was mainly used as a substitute for the capital’s side, but made 33 Champions League appearances for them, including the 1999-2000 final against Valencia (a 3-0 win). He missed most of the 1998-99 season due to a heart attack.

Karanka moved to Major League Soccer and the Colorado Rapids in 2006. In his only season in the U.S., he helped the team reach the Western Conference play-off final, although he was saved in the semifinals by Dario Sala in a penalty shootout win over FC Dallas.
International
Karanka has only made one senior appearance for Spain, on 26 April 1995, in a Euro 1996 qualifier against Armenia in Erevan (a 2-0 win). He made 14 appearances for the under-21s and was part of the team that lost to Italy in the 1996 European Championship final.
Karanka also represented the U.S. at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, where he competed in four events, eventually dropping out of the quarterfinals.

In June 2010, Karanka was appointed by the new coach Jose Mourinho as the former Real Madrid assistant coach. Three years later, he left the club with the arrival of Ancelotti, who brought his own coaching staff with him.

On 13 November 2013, Karanka was appointed manager of Championship club Middlesbrough, succeeding Tony Mowbray. Ten days later, his first game in charge ended in a 2-1 away defeat at Leeds United.
On April 25, 2015, in the club’s penultimate away game of the season against Fulham, Karanka sent goalkeeper Dimitrios Constantopoulos to interpolate a corner kick to rewrite the score. It’s 3-3: With the goalkeeper out of position, the opposition scores through Ross McCormack, who sends Watford into the Premier League and jeopardizes Middlesbrough’s own chances of promotion. He did qualify for the play-off final after beating Brentford 5-1 on aggregate, but they lost 2-0 to Norwich City at Wembley.
On August 7, 2015, Karanka signed a new four-year contract. Boro was at a high level during the campaign but on 11 March 2016 he unexpectedly left the training ground following an altercation with the club and his future at the club was considered; a subsequent match at Charlton Athletic The onus fell to his assistant Steve Agnew, but the Spaniard returned to the top flight as runner-up after a seven-year absence.
In the 2016-17 season, Karanka led Middlesbrough to the quarter-finals of the FA Cup and was eventually eliminated by Manchester City. He was sacked on March 16, 2017, and the team was three points behind top-flight safety and did not win a league title in the new year (although their defense was fifth in the division, their offense was the best Poor, with just 19 goals from 27 games, he had disagreements with players, fans and the board); the club and manager parted ways by mutual agreement because the latter felt he couldn’t lead the team further.
Nottingham Forest
On January 8, 2018, Karanka returned to the Championship after being appointed manager of Nottingham Forest. A year and three days later, he offered to rescind his contract and left the city; he put the team in seventh place, four points behind the play-off spot.

Karanka’s younger brother David is also a footballer. As a striker, he also appeared in the first team of Athletic but was much less influential, spending most of his career in the second or lower leagues.
