Airto Guimorvan Moreira (born 5 August 1941) is a Brazilian jazz drummer and percussionist. He is married to jazz singer Flora Prin, and their daughter Diana Moreira is also a singer. He rose to prominence as a member of the Brazilian group Quarteto Novo in the late 1960s, before moving to the United States and becoming known for his jazz fusions with Miles Davis, Return to Forever, and others.

Airto Moreira was born into a family of folk healers in Itaiópolis, Brazil, and grew up in Curitiba and São Paulo. Demonstrating extraordinary musical talent at a young age, he became a professional musician at the age of 13, initially as a member of the pioneering samba-jazz trio, the Samba Ranzo Trio, and recorded with Hermeto Pascoal in Quarteto Novo in 1967. A landmark record. Soon after, he followed his wife, Flora Prin, to the United States.
After moving to the United States, Moreira began working regularly with New York jazz musicians, including bassist Walter Booker. Through Booker, Moreira started playing with Joe Zavinur, who in turn introduced him to Miles Davis. At this time Davis was experimenting with electronic instruments and rock and funk rhythms in what would soon be known as jazz fusion. Moreira will be involved in several of the most important projects in this emerging form of music.He stayed with Davis for about two years, touring and working on the groundbreaking fusion record bitch brew (1970).
Shortly after leaving Davis, Moreira joined the weather report group of fellow Davis alumni Zawinul, Wayne Shorter and Miroslav Vitous, playing percussion on their first album (1971).He left Weather Report (replaced by Dom Um Romão and Muruga Booker lover album) join Davis alumna Chick Corea’s new band Return to Forever. He played drums on Return to Forever’s first two albums: back forever and light as a feather 1972.
Moreira is a contributor to many of Grateful Dead percussionist Mickey Hart’s world music/percussion albums in Rykodisc’s The World series, including Apocalypse Now Conference, Davos, hyperlanguageand planetary drum, won a World Music Grammy in 1991. He can be heard playing conga drums on Eumir Deodato’s 1970s space funk hit “Also sprach Zarathustra” on the album. prelude.
Moreira has worked with many of the biggest names in jazz, including Cannonball Adderley, Lee Morgan, Paul Desmond, Dave Holland, Jack DeJohnette, John McLaughlin, Keith Jarrett, Al Di Meola, Zakir Hussain, George Duke and Mickey Hart.
In addition to jazz concerts and recordings, he has composed and contributed music for film and television (including for Apocalypse Now and Last Tango in Paris), played at the reopening of the Alexandria Library in Egypt (with Halim El-Dabh, professor of ethnomusicology), and taught at UCLA and the California Brazil Summer Camp.
In 1996, Moreira and his wife Flora Purim collaborated with PM Dawn on the song “Non-Fiction Burning” for the AIDS charity album red hot + rioproduced by Red Hot Tissue.
