About Aina Kemanis: American singer and flutist (1952-)
Ina Kemanis (born 1952) is an American jazz singer and musician.
life and career
Aina Kemanis was born on June 15, 1952, to a Latvian family in Berkeley, California. With a folk/rock background, she was interested in medieval and renaissance music from an early age, singing and playing recorders in various ensembles.
Between 1979 and 1984, Kemanis lived in Europe, where she dabbled in contemporary jazz and improv music, and sang in numerous dance and theatre projects. During that time, she performed with the ensembles of Barre Phillips and Adelhard Roidinger.
For two years, Kemanis performed with the Eastern European Women’s Choir in Auckland. Since 1988 she has sung in Danish musician Marilyn Mazur’s band “Future Song” with pianist Elvira Plenar, trumpeter Nils Petter Molvær, bassist Klavs Hovman and second drummer Audun Kleive. She has also worked on Alex Cline’s team.
Kemanis is not a singer in the traditional sense; she often vocalizes silently, weaving a dense musical landscape with ethereal voices that are very present.
