Aimee Mullins (born July 20, 1975) is an American athlete, actress and fashion model. She was born with a disease that resulted in the amputation of both her lower legs. She competed against able-bodied athletes in the National Collegiate Athletic Association and competed in the 1996 Paralympic Games in Atlanta. Started modeling in 1999 and started acting career in 2002.
early life
Mullins was born in Allentown, Pennsylvania. She was born with fibular hemiplegia (lack of the fibula), so her legs were amputated below the knee when she was one year old. A graduate of Parkland High School in Allentown and Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., she began playing sports and acting at an early age. Also at Georgetown, Mullins was offered a place in the Foreign Affairs Internship Program where he worked at the Pentagon.

While receiving a full academic scholarship to Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service, she competed against able-bodied athletes in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I track and field, and was the first female amputee in history to compete in the NCAA. She is the first amputee (male or female) in history to compete in the NCAA Division I track and field.
In 1996, Mullins competed at the Atlanta Paralympics, where she completed the T42-46 100-meter dash in 17.01 seconds and jumped 3.14 meters in the F42-46 long jump. She retired from competitive track and field in 1998.
Elected to represent all American female athletes from 2007 to 2009, she served as president of the Women’s Sports Foundation, founded by sports pioneer Billie Jean King. Sports Illustrated The magazine called her one of the “coolest girls in sports”. Mullins is listed as one of the “Greatest Women of the 20th Century” at the Women’s Museum in Dallas, Texas.
Along with Theresa Edwards, Mullins was named head of the group Represented the United States at the 2012 Summer Olympics and the 2012 London Summer Paralympics.
In 2012, she was appointed by then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to a State Department committee to empower women and girls through sports, according to a State Department fact sheet.

She modeled for British fashion designer Alexander McQueen’s London runway show, and she wore a pair of hand-carved wooden prosthetic legs made of solid ash with one-piece boots. By changing her legs, she was able to change her height between 5’8″ and 6’1″.she was on the cover dazed and confused Magazine, 1998, and features in fashion magazines such as Harper’s Bazaar, Elle, Vogue, iD, Another, Numero, and Garage Magazine. She signed a contract to become the face of L’Oréal Paris and was appointed L’Oréal Global Ambassador in February 2011.

On May 4, 2018, she received an honorary degree and delivered the commencement address at Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts.
