About Ai Kawashima: Japanese Singer (1986-)
Ai Kawashima (Kawashima あい, Ai Kawashima, born February 21, 1986) is a Japanese pop singer-songwriter and pianist.Overcoming a tragic childhood, she releases her debut single Akino Feiping (Tomorrow’s Gate) in 2003 as the duo I Wish. She is known for countless street performances. She is also known for her dedication to helping children in situations similar to hers in Japan and around the world.
early life
Kawashima was born and raised in Fukuoka, Japan. After her birth, her mother’s health deteriorated and she died when Kawashima was only 3 years old. Because her father disappeared before she was born, she was taken to an orphanage and eventually adopted by the Kawashima family, the owner of a construction company. Her adoptive father died when she was 10 years old. After graduating high school, she moved to Tokyo. Her adoptive mother died when she was 16. She started playing the piano at the age of 3 and eventually started thinking about becoming a singer.
Profession
Kawashima started her career as an enka singer. At about age 10, she performed on stage at Carnegie Hall in New York. In 1999, released the first single, Juu-roku Koi Gokoro / Anata ni Kataomoi. However, the enka project was crippled by poor sales and abandoned entirely within a few months.
After that initial failure, she started singing her own songs with microphones and radio cassette players on busy street corners in Shibuya, Tokyo. In order to become famous, she set herself a goal of performing 1,000 times on the street. No one paid attention to her songs at first, but as she continued to perform on the streets, the crowd grew and she met people who supported her, culminating in her major debut and 2003 hit “Asueno tobira” (Tomorrow’s Gate). ) sold over 900,000 copies. She sang the song as the lead singer of the duo I Wish. She has been performing solo since the duo split in 2005. Her second solo single “12-ko no Kisetsu” (12 Seasons) reached number 10 on the World Billboard Hits in Japan. Even after her major debut, she continued to perform in the street, and in 2005 she completed 1,000 street performances, which, according to Kawashima, became the foundation of her music. In 2009, she performed at Japan Day in Central Park, New York.
personal life
Kawashima dedicates her time and money to projects that build schools in developing countries. Three schools have been built so far, and her goal is to build 100 schools.
Since her mother’s death, she has held a memorial concert on August 20 every year.
On the evening of March 11, 2011, 20 elementary school students who were able to escape the devastating tsunami after the Tohoku earthquake comforted each other with singing Tabidachi no hi ni (On the day of departure) Overnight at a local shrine together. Students have been practicing the song for their graduation ceremony, which is only a week away. After hearing the story, Kawashima visited the students in the shelter on April 6 and sang the same song together. On August 21, she visited the students again for their belated graduation and sang the song together. The song ends with “Let’s bloom from this bud”.
