About Ahmet Kaya: Kurdish Singer (1957 – 2000)
Ahmed Kaya (October 28, 1957 – November 16, 2000) was a folk singer, born in Malatya, Turkey. He is of half Kurdish-Turkish descent and often calls himself the “Kurdish of Turkey”. Many of his albums have broken sales records. With over 20 albums, Kaya was by far one of the most influential and controversial artists of the 20th century in Turkey, and he was very outspoken on social and political issues; had to flee Turkey for France and died in exile. A dirge “Ya beni sararsa memleket hasreti / What if I get homesick” tells the story of his pain, suffering and longing for people and homes torn apart. Many believe this led to his sudden death at a very young age. In 1999, Ahmet Kaya was invited to accept the award at a televised awards ceremony, announcing that he wanted to “sing in Kurdish,” at a great price. He was declared a villain by the authorities; national newspapers and television stations characterized the fabricated news as a “traitor.” Turkish media described Kaya as “a member of the PKK and with Abdullah Ocalan” as he declared he was Kurdish.
Profession
Ahmet Kaya is the fifth and last child of a mixed-race family with a Kurdish father who moved from Adiyaman to Malatya and a Turkish mother. Although he claimed to be Kurdish in his later years, he did not speak Kurdish. He had his first exposure to music at the age of six. Ahmet Kaya worked as a taxi driver in Istanbul for a while before becoming a famous singer in the mid-1980s.
his first album, Aggrama BebeimIssued in 1985. His popularity continued to rise into the 1990s when his album was released in 1994 Şarkılarım Dağlara A record amount was sold. All of his 1990 albums became chart-toppers.
During his career, he recorded about 20 albums and is known for his protest music and social justice stances. A recurring theme in his songs is love, sacrifice and hope for his mother.
Awards ceremony event
On February 10, 1999, at Show TV, the televised annual music awards ceremony, where he was named Musician of the Year, Kaya said he wanted to make music in his native language because of his Kurdish background. He also announced that he recorded a song in Kurdish (Kavan, posted on Hoşçakalın Gözüm 2001 album), and intend to make a video to accompany it.
After the announcement, he was met with backlash from the Turkish people and celebrities at the event. First, Serdar Ortaç began to sing a song with the lyrics altered to enhance nationalist sentiments, and then the people at the ceremony began to sing the 10th Year March. Later, Kaya is attacked by celebrities. Kaya’s wife described the attack as “suddenly, all those fashionable women and men, turned into monsters, grabbed knives and forks and threw them at us, insulting, booing. Just imagine the atmosphere in just five minutes. Change, almost Kafkaesque transformation.”
Exile and death
The incident led to a prosecution case that caused him to leave Turkey. In March 2000, he was sentenced in absentia to three years and nine months in prison for spreading separatist propaganda. Later, however, mass media allegations against Kaya in front of the poster were proven to be false. He died of a heart attack in Paris in 2000 at the age of 43 and was buried in the Père Lachaise cemetery. It is buried in item number 71.
