“I went to Leeds, Sheffield Wednesday and Barnsley and they all told me I wasn’t good enough,” Godfrey said.
“In Leeds and Barnsley, I was told I was no better than all the other academy players they had at the club. It was pretty much the same message as Sheffield Wednesday.
“A huge turning point for me and my family that stayed with me forever was when Leeds let me go after a trial. Go prove us wrong,” said one of the coaches. ”
“I remember thinking: ‘You know what? I will.’ I had a conversation with my family about this, and I ended up back in York and on a mission to prove those people wrong.”

After being rejected by Leeds United, Godfrey played for York at the age of 17 and began his journey to captain the Canaries in the Premier League at the age of 21.
He showed that early rejections didn’t have to be the end of his career and now shines for Everton.
Leeds also bought two expensive centre-backs in the summer – Diego Llorente and Robin Koch – but neither of them will be involved in tonight’s game against West Ham.
No one knows how Godfrey would have developed had he stayed at Elland Road, but being fired certainly wouldn’t stop him.
