2005 United States Grand Prix relived after Hungary restart

Lewis Hamilton was the only driver to restart the Formula 1 Hungarian Grand Prix from the grid, prompting some to recall a time in 2005 when only six cars started the race.
Why did Hamilton want to reboot himself?
After the red flag of the first lap split by Valtteri Bottas, Hamilton led the remaining 14 cars to the start.
However, around 30 minutes into the suspension, the rain stopped and the track dried up quickly.
Williams driver George Russell declares ‘everyone boxing’ is enough [for slicks]” via Team Broadcast.
When the field rolled to the grid, Hamilton chose not to pit.
Eventual race winner Esteban Ocon led everyone else on dry tires.
This led to a fantasy scenario where Hamilton was the only car to restart on the track, while the team was parked at the end of the pits waiting for the green light to rejoin.
When Hamilton pitted on the final lap, Alpine driver Ocon took the lead and dropped to last.
Back to F1’s worst nightmare
The unusual and somewhat amusing image of just one car waiting for the lights to go out on the grid has some F1 fans reminiscent of the events of the 2005 United States Grand Prix in Indianapolis.
That day, a full-blown farce that resulted in just six cars, including Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello’s Ferrari, began.
That was after Michelin-supplied tires suffered serious high-speed failures throughout practice, and the company was reluctant to rule out a repeat at the race.
Schumacher’s brother Ralf was one of the victims, after his left rear tire blew in the final corner of Friday’s practice session, keeping him out of the race for the rest of the weekend.
His successor, Ricardo Zonta, also suffered a left-rear fault that led the Michelin boss to inform the FIA that their product would not last more than ten laps on asphalt on the recently resurfaced motorway.
This has led to talks between Michelin, tire manufacturer Bridgestone, the FIA and the teams to try to reach a compromise.
An extra chicane to reduce speed into the pit lane was an idea, but the FIA took a tough stance, effectively accusing Michelin of failing to bring the right equipment to the event.
The FIA also believes that Bridgestone’s three teams should not be held back by the failure.
In the end, all attempts at compromise failed, with pole driver Toyota’s Jarno Trulli leading a swarm of Michelin runners into the pits at the end of the formation lap.
The likes of Fernando Alonso, Jenson Button, Kimi Raikkonen and David Coulthard – who wanted to play despite the risks – followed orders and came in.
Along with the Ferrari duo, both Jordan and Minardi’s cars started, and they both sensed a rare chance at a podium finish.
Jordan’s Thiago Monteiro ended up in trouble as the Portuguese joined Schumacher and Barrichello on the podium.

What happened after the 2005 United States Grand Prix?
Michelin’s reputation took a hit, and the company withdrew as a tire supplier to F1 at the end of the 2006 season. Haven’t been back since then.
There was reportedly interest in doing so when a tender for the tyre contract was issued a few years ago, but F1 has opted to stick with Pirelli.
For F1 itself, however, it could be worse.
Since its inception in 1950, the World Championships has attempted to break into the US market, often with little success.
It wasn’t just six cars that started the race, it was also where the shame happened – Indianapolis Motor Speedway, home of the Indianapolis 500.
F1 wasn’t forgiven by some in America for the “show” that day, despite the series already Start repairing its reputation.
The United States Grand Prix is now held in Austin, Texas, on the country’s first purpose-built F1 track.

The exposure of the champion, fueled by the popularity of the Netflix series Drive To Survive, Brings huge growth in the US market to F1.
That led to a second game in the country for the first time since 1984, and the Miami Speedway around the Miami Dolphins’ HardRock Stadium will join the calendar in 2022.
