Zeresenay Alemseged is an Ethiopian paleoanthropologist and chair of the Department of Anthropology at the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco. He is best known for his discovery on December 10, 2000 of Selam, also known as “Lucy’s Child”, the nearly complete fossil remains of a 3.3-million-year-old child of A. afarensis. “The oldest child in the world,” she has the most complete skeleton of a human ancestor ever found. Selam represents a milestone in our understanding of human and pre-human evolution, and has greatly advanced our understanding of the biology and childhood of early species in the human lineage; a subject we know very little about. Alemseged discovered Selam while working with the multinational research project Dikika Research Project (DRP), which he initiated and led in 1999. To date, the DRP has made many important paleoanthropological discoveries, and every year it returns to the field for further important research. Alemseged’s specific research focuses on the discovery and interpretation of human fossil remains and their environment, with a focus on fieldwork aimed at obtaining new data on early human skeletal biology, environmental context, and behavior.
Originally a geologist, after graduating from Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia in 1990, he worked in the Paleoanthropology Laboratory of the Ethiopian National Museum.
