Vishal Bharadwaj is an Indian filmmaker. Beginning his career as a music composer with the film Abhay (The Fearless) (1995), Vishal quickly became an accomplished director, screenwriter, producer and broadcast singer. He has scored many Bollywood hits and won seven National Film Awards in four categories.

Vishal Bharadwaj was born on 4th August 1965 into a Brahmin family (Age: 54, 2018) in Bijnor, Uttar Pradesh, India. His father Ram Bharadwaj is a sugar cane inspector and his mother is a housewife. His father also wrote lyrics and poems for Hindi films. He completed his primary education in Najibabad and later, his family moved to Meerut and Vishal started playing cricket for the state’s under-19 team. He was unable to continue his cricket career because he broke his thumb during practice. At the age of 17, he composed a song. When his father heard the song, he was impressed and discussed it with music director Usha Khanna. She used the song in the movie Yaar Kasam (1985). Later, Bharadwaj moved to Delhi to pursue a degree at the Hindu College of Delhi University.

Vishal Bharadwaj was born to Ram Bharadwaj and Satya Bharadwaj. He had a brother who was working hard to become a filmmaker in Mumbai, but he died of a heart attack. He is married to his college classmate and singer Rekha Bhardwaj. They met at a university event at the University of Delhi. His wife is a year older than him. The couple have a son, Asman.

Earlier, he used to play Harmonium with his friends who were ghazal singers. A few years later, he got a job at CBC Music in Delhi. Later, he went to Mumbai to become a music composer. In 1995, he made his debut as a music composer in the film “The Fearless.” He became the music director of Gulzar’s “Maachis” for which he received the Filmfare RD Burman Award for New Musical Talent. In 2000, he won the National Film Award for Best Musical Direction for his critically acclaimed film The Godmother (1999).
In 2002, with the horror film “Makdee” directed for the first time. Vishal was inspired by William Shakespeare’s Macbeth and decided to make it into a feature film. He started working with Abbas Tyrewala. The film was titled Maqbool and was released in 2003. The film is based on the Mumbai underworld. CNN-IBN listed Maqbool as one of the 100 greatest Hindi movies of all time. In 2010, film critic Raja Sen included it in his list of the 75 Hindi movies of the past decade. In 2007, the 13-minute short film “Blood Brothers” was filmed. The film tells the story of an HIV-positive young man who has his life falling apart. In 2009, he filmed “Kaminey” starring Shahid Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra. The film was a commercial success, grossing over $10 million at the box office. Later, he was inspired by Ruskin Bond’s short story “Suzanne’s Seven Husbands”. Vishal made a film on it called “7 Khoon Maaf” which was released in 2011. He has also directed some other films like Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola, Rangoon, Pataakha etc. He made his production debut with the film “Ishqiya” starring Vidya Balan, Naseeruddin Shah and Arshad Warsi. Vishal has also produced some other films such as “Ek Thi Daayan” and Ekta Kapoor’s Balaji Motion Pictures, “Dedh Ishqiya”. In 2015, he co-produced Gulzar’s crime drama Talwa. In addition to composing, he has voiced voices in several films including “No Smoking”, “Omkara”, “U Me Aur Hum”, “Striker”, “Kaminey”, “Haider” and more.

Actor Anupam Kher, who is also a Kashmir expert, found it embarrassing and in a series of tweets accused Vishal Bharadwaj of making a biased film. Kher further added that Bharadwaj portrayed the Indian army as villains and the views of Kashmiri experts were not shown in the film.
