In 1981, when Vail was one year old, his parents moved to Lagos, Nigeria, Africa, where he spent his childhood. He grew up in different boarding schools in India because Nigerian schools are not good. At the age of nine, he attended Lawrence School in Sanava (near Shimla, Himachal Pradesh). Later, he attended Derry Public Schools. He has been active in debate, drama and sports since he went to school in Sanawar, but his studies were poor. In an interview, he revealed that he was a rebellious kid during his school days. He said,
It’s hard for me because I’m individualistic. I won’t shut up. I was the kid who was beaten but spoke during the beating. “
He discovered his speaking skills at the age of 12, when he picked up the microphone and made a joke during the interjection round of a debate. During his vacations, he frequents Lagos, where his parents live in a heavily guarded compound of seven houses. Then, Nigeria is home to several Indian expats. Indians are advised to stay indoors due to the chaos of law and order in Africa, so Verdas spends his time watching movies in his video library. Recalling his childhood memories of Nigeria, he said in an interview,
There are a lot of Indians there and they have a rich Indian cultural association. But the law and order is not good, you can only stay at home, there are a lot of armed guards at the gate, and there are a lot of drivers…that means you can’t ride a bike outside, so a bit of a closed life. That means you can’t drive a luxury car or wear it in Africa Jewelry because you might get robbed. “

When Veldas was 16, his parents moved back to India after witnessing the deteriorating political and financial situation in Africa. In an interview about his parents returning to India, he said,
When we first went there in 1981, a naira was a dollar and a half, but when we left Nigeria, a dollar was probably equal to 120 naira. It was a journey that got worse and worse. Years later, when there was an emergency in Nigeria, my parents finally moved back to Delhi, President 5 was assassinated, and everyone decided, well, it was time to leave. “
Growing up, he regularly watched American college films such as Dead on Campus (1998) and National Lampoon’s Van Wilder (2002), which sparked his interest in further studies in the United States. As he is a basketball player, he entered Sri Venkateswara College in New Delhi through a sports quota. Halfway through Srivenkathwara College, he went to Illinois to continue his graduation. He did a double major in Economics and Drama at Knox College. Then, Knox’s annual fee is $26,000. Vir Das funded his $20,000 worth of expenses through a scholarship and persuaded his father to fund the rest by agreeing to his terms of choosing a double major. During his first year of college, he started playing the guitar, sometimes even playing it on the street to earn money.

At Knox, his grades were poor because he was exhausted because of the tough acting classes through fourth grade. He wanted to pursue a career in a free-flowing field, so he became interested in stand-up comedy. In addition, since childhood, he was interested in the work of American comedian Bill Cosby. For his dissertation at Knox, he wrote a 60-minute show called “Brown Men Can’t Hump,” which offended acting and drama teachers. After graduating in 2002, he studied acting at Harvard’s Stanislavsky Institute.

Without Indians, you’d be starving, trapped, sexually sterile, and stupid!” I laughed for the first time. “
