Profession
Vikram had a breakout role in 1999 as a brain-damaged college student in filmmaker Barra’s tragic film Sethu, his directorial debut. In 2001, he played an aspiring cop role in the action film Dhill, making his directorial debut Dharani.
Vikram played the quintessential Tamil action hero in a string of successful masala films starting with Gemini in 2002, which grossed Rs 100 crore. The following year, with consecutive hits at Dhoo in 2003 and Saamy in 2003, he became a star.
He then played an autistic undertaker in Bala’s tragic Pithamagan co-starring with Suriya in 2003. Vikram endured an expert setback between 2004 and 2008, when a string of films including Arul, Majaa and Bheemaa received mixed reviews and flopped commercially.
Vikram’s only box office success during this period was S. Shankar’s 2005 psychological thriller Anniyan, in which he played a utopian lawyer with multiple personality disorder.
In Susi Ganesan’s Kanthaswamy, he played the role of a CBI officer who played a costumed vigilante in the moonlight. Vikram was introduced to Bollywood in 2010 by Mani Ratnam through his Hindi-Tamil bilingual Raavan and Raavanan, a contemporary retelling of the Ramayana in which he plays the antagonist and main character.
In 2011, he played a developmentally disabled man fighting for custody of his daughter in AL Vijay’s courtroom drama Deiva Thirumagal, based on the 2001 American film I Am Sam. His next role as Rajapattai as the aspiring screen villain was poorly received.
In 2012, Vikram starred in AL Vijay’s revenge thriller Thaandavam, playing a blind RAW operative who uses human echolocation to track down his betrayer. Shankar’s romantic thriller I features Vikram, a supermodel turned hunchback who takes revenge on his conspirators in 2015. The film grossed over INR 2.4 billion and Vikram’s performance was well-received.
