Vidit Gujrathi was born on Monday 24 October 1994 (Age 26; same as 2020) in Indore, Madhya Pradesh. His full name is Vidit Santosh Gujrathi. His zodiac sign is Scorpio. He completed his studies at Flawahi College in Nashik. He started coaching chess at a very young age, and in 2006 his efforts paid off when he finished second in the U-12 category of the Asian Youth Championship.

Vidit’s father’s name is Santosh Gujrathi and his mother’s name is Nikita Santosh Gujrathi. Both his parents were doctors. He also has a younger sister, Vedika Gujrathi.

Profession
After completing his studies, Vidit started teaching chess from an early age, and in 2006 he won the second place in the U-12 group of the Asian Youth Championship and was awarded the title of FIDE Master. In 2008, Vidit was awarded the title of International Master by scoring 7 out of 13 points in the 45th National A Chess Championship in Chennai. In the same year, he became the first Indian to win the World Youth Championship at the U14 Open. In 2011, during the World Junior Chess Championship, Vidit won his first Grandmaster title with a score of 8 out of 11. After earning his second GM Standard at the Nagpur International Open, Vidit achieved the final GM Standard at the eighth 2012 Rose Valley Kolkata Open Masters Championship. This helped him earn the title of Master in January 2013. Over the years, Vidit’s coaches have included several chess masters such as IM Anup Deshmukh, IM Roktim Bandopadhyay and GM Alon Greenfeld. Vidit achieved its highest Elo rating of 2726 in September 2020 and remains at #24 in the world.

In 2018, Vidit Gujrathi had to go out to buy water with compatriots Abhijit Kunte and Lalit Babu when he was competing in the Asian Championships in Makati, Philippines, when the group was attacked by unidentified assailants. Vidit posted about the incident, saying they were cornered and then attacked. They managed to get out of the situation and save themselves from the mob. He also informed the chess federation about the problems with the facilities provided to the players. Players had to pay $150 for a room with poor facilities, poor food and poor cleanliness. This was noted by FIDE Director General Emir Sutowski, who has contacted the authorities over the complaint.

- In collaboration with ChessBase, a German company in the chess field, Vidit has recorded two instructional DVDs for beginners. These are named “Fashionable Karokan Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 Vidit Gujrathi.”
