In September 2020, Sumit Nagar became the first player in seven years to beat American Bradley Kahn 6-1, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 in a Grand Slam tournament. Sumit Nagal was born on Saturday 16 August 1997 (23; same as 2020) in Jajar, Haryana. His zodiac sign is Leo. He completed his studies at Little Angels High School in Jhajjar, Haryana and Rajkiya Pratibha Vikas Vidyalaya in Paschim Vihar, New Delhi. Sumit has been interested in cricket since he was a child. Although, his father wanted him to do something different, he persuaded him to play tennis. Summit tried the sport and he loved it. His love for tennis grew and he started playing tennis regularly. His school coach also admired his game and advised his father to take Sumit’s professional training.

Sumit’s family moved to Delhi when he was 7 years old. His father got him into the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) Tennis Academy. Sumit started participating in tournaments and other sports clubs. He also won his first tennis tournament at the age of 8.

When Sumit was 10 years old, Mahesh Bhupathi and other international tennis players launched a talent hunt to find, train and develop India’s first singles Grand Slam champion by 2018 called Mission 2018. Sumit’s father took him to Bangalore for the event. Over 5,000 students attended the event, with Sumit being one of the youngest contestants. He had the opportunity to play before Mahesh Bhupathi, who was selected for the program along with 2 other participants.

Two years later, the program was shut down for some reason. Mahesh Bhupathi stopped training him, but he continued to support Sumit financially. Canadian tennis player and coach Bobby Mahal watched Sumit play and invited him to Canada to train and coach him. Sumit’s family could not afford to send him to Canada, but Mahesh Bhupathi was responsible for his travel and accommodation in Canada. Sumit trained with Bobby Mahal from 2008 to 2014, during which time he also started competing in junior events and started moving up the standings.

Bhupathi became Sumit’s manager and mentor. He used to give him advice on how to play, what events to play and how to improve his standing in the standings. In 2015, Sumit was admitted Schutler Vasque Tennis University, and then he moved to Germany. In Germany, he trained with German coach Sacha Nessel. Sumit started competing in many junior competitions and he even won many competitions. In 2015, he teamed up with Vietnamese tennis star Lee Hoang Nam to win the Wimbledon men’s doubles title and win the championship. It was his first Junior Grand Slam title, making him the sixth Indian to win a Junior Grand Slam event.

In 2015, Sumit turned professional. He represented India for the first time in the Davis Cup in 2016, and he did very well. He was noticed and many congratulated him on his excellent performance. In 2019, Summit qualified for the Grand Slam for the first time. He qualified for the US Open and made his debut against Roger Federer on August 26, 2019. On September 2, 2020, Sumit Nagal made history by beating American Bradley Crane 6-1, 6-3, 3-6 to become the first major in seven years to reach No. 1 in a singles event The Indians in the second round went 6-1 in the first round of the US Open.

In 2017, the All India Tennis Association (AITA) removed Sumit from the Indian team in the Davis Cup. Authorities said he was removed for disciplinary reasons. It is reported that in 2016 Sumit missed some practice due to a hangover and once invited his girlfriend to his hotel without notifying the authorities.
