Sukumara Kurup saw a girl named Sarasamma at a relative’s house in Mumbai and fell in love with her. At the time, Sarasama’s mother was working as a domestic helper at the Cheriyanad home in Kurup. Sarasamma attended nursing courses in Mumbai while Kurup was at IAF. The two met several times and started dating. Soon, Kurup’s parents learned about it and wrote several letters to Sarasama ordering her to end their relationship. However, Kurup was madly in love with her, and when he was about to move to Abu Dhabi, he married Sarasama in a secret ceremony at a temple in Matunga against the wishes of his family. In Abu Dhabi, Sarasama worked as a nurse at a private hospital. The couple has two sons. Their youngest son is named Sunit Pillai. After Kurup was charged with Chaco’s murder, his wife lost her job and his family was ostracized by the community.
Profession
Sukumara started his career as a pilot in the Indian Air Force. He worked there briefly and was unable to return to the unit after a long vacation at home. Krupp was thus labelled a traitor. He then bribed a sergeant of the police special unit to falsify a report saying “Gopalakrishna Kurup” that the pilot had died. He asked officers to send the report to the IAF to end the “deserter” investigation into him. Kurup then changed his status and applied for a passport called “Sukumara Pillai”. Subsequently, he moved to the bay. In Abu Dhabi, Kurup started working as an executive at an offshore oil company.
gain superior social and economic status
Kurup’s work in Abu Dhabi brings him a steady income. Soon, he became friends with a group of people and started spending lavishly at parties. He often helps his friends in times of crisis, no matter how close they are to him. Kurup usually brings suitcases full of gifts to his friends and family when he visits Kerala on holidays. He soon gained a privileged social and economic status, insisting on paying for alcohol for friends during his stay in Kerala. Kurup is starting to be very proud of it. Once, during a stay in Kerala, Kurup bought a piece of land in Ambalapuzha to build a house. He even bought an ambassador car for leisure travel. His habit of spending a lot led to a low bank balance. Despite getting a decent salary of Rs. At 60,000 a month (the combined income of Kurup and his wife), they barely saved a cent. During his stay in Kerala in 1984, news broke that Gulf companies were planning to lay off staff and hire new workers at low wages. At that time, his house was under construction and he needed money.
The desire to mint coins quickly
Accustomed to a lavish lifestyle, Krupp began to find ways to get huge sums of money quickly. One night, he stumbles across a case of financial embezzlement in Germany; the perpetrator faked his death and his nominee took the money.
Financial Embezzlement Cases
The story of the incident in Germany is that a man killed a man who looked similar to him, put him in the driver’s seat of a car and set it on fire to make it look like an accident, then set him on fire. life claim insurance amount.
infamous chaco murder
On January 21, 1984, Kurup, along with his brother-in-law Bhaskara Pillai (husband of his wife’s sister), his driver Ponnappan and his close aide Shanu, killed a man named Chacko (much like Kurup), in order to fake his own death, thereby claiming a life insurance amount of Rs. 800 000. At the time, Chacko had been married for less than a year, and his wife, Santhamma, was pregnant with their first child. Apparently, Sukumara fled abroad after the incident. However, his two co-defendants, his driver Ponnappan and his brother-in-law Bhaskara Pillai, were sentenced to life imprisonment. His friend Sha Hu was approved and later released. The case, one of the longest in Kerala judicial history, was closed in 1996 after a 12-year search.
Implementation plan
Impressed by the scheme (the German financial embezzlement case), Kurup pitched the idea to his friend Shahu at a cocktail party. He later persuaded his brother-in-law, Bhaskara Pillai, and his driver, Ponnappan, to be part of his bizarre scheme to claim insurance money by faking his own death. The stake is 8 lakh rupees.
Shortly after everyone accepted his plan, Kurup asked Pillay to arrange for a used car to execute the plan. His brother-in-law bought a used Ambassador car for Rs. 8000. Initially, as a relative of Pillay worked at the Alappuzha Medical College, he planned to operate on an unclaimed corpse (which he looked familiar). He even thought about picking up a body from the cemetery. When all their efforts to find the body were in vain, Sukumara suggested murder. On the evening of January 21, 1984, the four of them met at the Kalpakavadi Hotel in Karuvatta. After dinner and a few drinks, they started looking for victims. While Kurup got into the ambassador car (KLQ-7831) in droves, all the others boarded the car with the license plate KLY-5959.
The four of them rode across the highway (about 25 kilometers) and couldn’t find their prey. Later, when they approached Harry’s Cinema, they saw Chacko, the film’s representative, come out of the cinema (after assessing the theater’s ticketing situation) and ask for a ride. Chaco asked,
Are you going to Alappuzha? “
Kurup’s driver replied,
Come in. “
Although they kept going in opposite directions, they changed direction and hitchhiked for Chaco. As soon as the car pulled up to Alappuzha, Pillay handed Chaco a glass of brandy mixed with ether. However, Chaco refused. Pillay offered him the drink again, and when Chaco refused a second time, Pillay exclaimed:
Drink it. “
Out of fear, Chaco swallowed quickly, lost consciousness, and collapsed on their lap within seconds.
After that, Pillai and Shahu strangled Chaco with towels. They then took Chacko’s body to Smita Bhavan, Kurup’s wife’s hometown in Cheriyanadu, where they took off his clothes and burned his face to misrepresent his identity. They removed his ring and other items and dressed him in Sukuma’s clothes. Afterwards, the four of them loaded Chaco’s body into the ambassador’s car and set off towards the rice fields in Tannimukam. Once at the scene, they put Chaco’s body in the driver’s seat, doused it with gasoline, and set the car on fire.
detector
On January 22, 1984, around 5:00 am, a passerby called the Mavelikkara Police Station and told them there were burning cars on the road. Inside the car was the charred body of a man. Upon learning of the news, Circle Inspector M. Haridas and his team members arrived at the crime site. During preliminary investigations, police identified the man in the car as Sukumara Kurup. However, the autopsy report revealed that the man was not Kurup. In addition, despite being destroyed by the fire, there was no trace of charcoal in the body’s respiratory system, and the cause of death became suspicious. As police scrutinized the crime area, tiny clues pointing to some fake game began to pile up. Around the car, police found a matchbox, a pair of shoes and a rubber glove with strands of hair inside. There were also footprints in the mud, suggesting someone flew away from the scene.
Haridas, the deputy superintendent handling the case, described the incident in an interview, saying,
I arrived at the crime scene at 5:30 that morning. I suspected foul play from the start as I noticed a matchbox, a glove and petrol stains in the area. I found out that the car belonged to an expat, Sukumara Kurup. But in subsequent investigations, we found out that the body was not Kurup’s. “
In addition, the forensic team also found that there was a poisonous gas in the stomach of the deceased. Police eventually concluded that the person was killed and then placed in the vehicle. During the investigation, police raised suspicions about Kurup’s family because they did not behave like a bereaved family. They then placed plainclothes police outside Kurup’s home to monitor his family, only to discover that, two days after Sukumara’s death, the family ate a sumptuous pilaf, which was unusual.
Chacko’s absence, on the other hand, led his brother to file a missing persons complaint at the Mavelikkara Police Station. Initially, his wife Santhamma did not take Chacko’s absence seriously because her husband was often away from his home for a few days due to the nature of his work. However, when she read about the murder in the newspaper, she became suspicious. Although Chacko’s body was completely burned, his wife, Santhamma, reportedly recognized him by the underwear he was wearing (the only piece of clothing on Chacko that was not completely burned).
With the identity of Chaco (the deceased), the police quickly linked leads and concluded that Kurup faked his death for the money. Although police managed to arrest the other three defendants in the case (his driver Ponnappan, his brother-in-law Bhaskara Pillai and his friend Shahu), Kurup narrowly escaped.
