Sindhutai Sapkal was born on Sunday 14 November 1948 (Age 73; at the time of death) in the villages of Pimpri Meghe, Varda and Berar, Central Province, Dominion of India (present-day Maharashtra, India). Her zodiac sign is Scorpio. She grew up in a poor family and was forced to live in poverty with family responsibilities. She married a man twenty years her senior when she was ten. At that time, she was in the fourth grade. During her studies, she wrote with baladi leaves because her family could not afford slate. Her father and mother clashed over her studies. Her mother didn’t want her to study, but her father was keen to educate her. So her father, unaware that her mother thought she was going to herd cattle, sent her to school. After her marriage, she moved to the village of Nawargaon in Valdacelu, where her husband often harassed her. Abandoned by her husband at the age of 20. At that time, she was pregnant. Then she gave birth to a baby girl. In an interview, she recalled,
“I cut the umbilical cord with a sharp stone nearby.”
She had thought about suicide when her mother wouldn’t let her in. She then started begging on the streets and railway platforms in Chikhaldara, Amravati district, Maharashtra state. She also took refuge in a cemetery and a cowshed out of concern for her daughter’s safety. At that time, she saw many orphans lying on the streets and platforms begging. Then she adopted them and begged to feed them more strictly. It became her life’s mission. To remove the sense of preference between her biological daughter and her adopted child, she donated the child to the Shrimant Dagdu Sheth Halwai Trust in Pune (Maharashtra). Her daughter herself runs an orphanage in Maharashtra. She said in an interview,
“I have no one with me and everyone has abandoned me. I know the pain of being alone and unwelcome. I don’t want anyone to go through the same thing. Seeing some of my kids do so well in their lives , I am very proud and happy. One of my children made a documentary about my life.”
