Her mother passed away in 2018.

Elizabeth Powell, was an active community worker and the founder of a group called the Southside Prayer Band, which provides services such as cooking, cleaning and fundraising to those in need. In 1992, she began working as a video editor for WROC Channel 8 in Rochester, New York. She worked there for two years and one month. From July to August 1996, she was a graduate teaching assistant at Arizona State University’s Geological Field School. For the next two months, she was a geoscience instructor for the Upward Bound Program at GateWay Community College in Phoenix, Arizona. From May 2004 to July 2004, she was an Ecology Program Consultant under NASA’s NASA Space and Life Sciences Training Program (SLSTP).

She was selected as one of 47 finalists and received a “yes/no” call from an astronaut. During NASA’s final selection process, she failed to be one of nine astronaut candidates selected for the 2009 NASA astronaut crew. She often gives inspirational speeches about how she almost became an astronaut. Over the next decade, she applied to NASA twice, but failed. In 2020, she passed NASA’s application. She was selected to pilot the Crew Dragon mission Inspiration4 (symbolizing prosperity), which is scheduled to fly in space with four people aboard the SpaceX Resilience capsule. In 2013, she served as Education Extension Officer for the Hawaii Space Exploration Simulation and Simulation (HI-SEAS) mission, a simulated habitat for human spaceflight. HI-SEAS is located in an isolated location on the slopes of Mauna Loa, Hawaii. The island of Hawaii, with features similar to Mars. The mission, orchestrated by NASA, the University of Hawaii at Manoa and Cornell University, took four months. The mission is focused on identifying food strategies for long-duration spaceflight and missions to the moon or Mars. PolarTREC
Sian was selected as a teacher for the 2014 PolarTREC, a National Science Foundation (NSF)-funded program in which K-12 teachers participate in field research in polar regions. She spent a month in Utchavik (then Barrow), Alaska, learning the historical ecology of risk management and investigating the impact of climate change on coastlines and communities.

She was selected as a 2016 Ambassador for the Chilean Astronomy Education Ambassador Program (ACEAP), and she visited the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory (CTIO), the Gemini South Observatory and the Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array (ALMA) with eight other ambassadors. ACEAP is a National Science Foundation (NSF) program that sends K-16 formal and informal astronomy educators to U.S. astronomy facilities in Chile.
