Shraddha Bindroo is an Associate Professor of Indian Medicine at PGI Chandigarh, India. She is best known as the daughter of the slain Kashmiri Pandit Mahan Lal Bindru.

She was born into a Hindu Kashmiri Pandit family. Her father, Makhan Lal Bindroo, is the owner of Bindroo Medicare in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, India. Makhan owns two pharmacies of his own, founded in 1947 by his father Late Rakeshwar Nath Bindroo. Shraddha’s mother Kiran Bindroo works in their pharmacy. Her brother, Dr. Siddharth Bindroo, is a well-known diabetologist in Kashmir, India.

Father killed in terror attack
Shraddha’s father, Makhan Lal Bindroo, and his family decided to stay in Kashmir to serve the country in 1990, while the Kashmiri Panzhiks were leaving India. He owns a pharmacy in Indira Nagar, Srinagar. He is one of the most popular pharmacists in town. On October 5, 2021, Makhan Lal Bindroo and two other civilians were killed by terrorists in Srinagar. Terrorists shot and killed Makhan Lal while he was at his pharmacy.

Although he was rushed to SMHS Hospital, Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, he died before reaching the hospital. The other two civilians killed in the attack were Mohd Shafi Lone in the Shahgund district of Bandipola, Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, and Rabazar in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir Virender Paswan (street vendors) near Madina Chowk. According to the local police,
Makhan Lal Bindroo was shot four times and was pronounced dead at SMHS Hospital. A renowned chemist in the region, Bindroo has been running his pharmacy in Srinagar for decades and is known for his charitable work.
After his death, various politicians shared their grief. Jammu and Kashmir People’s Democratic Party Chairman Mehbooba Mufti said,
With the recent spate of civilian killings in Kashmir, the GOI’s false narrative of normalcy has fallen apart. A utterly insensitive government that devalues human lives and adopts a ruthless policy of collective punishment in the guise of safety pushes J&K into further danger and chaos. “
Jammu and Kashmir Deputy Governor Manoj Sinha said,
I strongly condemn this cowardly act. My deepest condolences to the family of the deceased. The perpetrators of this heinous act will soon be brought to justice. “
Makhan Lal’s son told reporters,
Condolences to people from all walks of life. Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs, everyone is here, if it weren’t for Covid, thousands of people would come. He’s a man everyone loves and doesn’t compete with anyone. “
Later, Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) Mayor Junaid Azim Mattu said that a road in Srinagar will be named after Makhan Lal Bindroo. He further said,
The road from Haft Chinar Chowk to Jehangir Chowk (where Bindroo Medicare is located) will be named Shaheed Makhan Lal Bindroo Road in honour of his contribution to society. “

Shraddha’s comments make her a hero
After Shraddha’s father died, she was interviewed by reporters. Her brave words made her a hero, and as soon as the video went viral on social media, she was greatly appreciated by netizens. When a reporter asked her about her father’s death, she said,
My dad was a fighter and always said ‘I’m going to die in my shoes. You can kill a person but you cannot kill the spirit of Makhan Lal. Whoever shot my father, came to me. My father gave me education and politicians gave you guns and stones. Do you want to fight with guns and stones? That is cowardice. All politicians are using you to fight education. “
Pointing to the attacker, she said,
Sir, if you have the guts and the courage to shoot my father while he was working, come and argue with us face to face. Then we’ll see what you are. You can’t say a word. All you can do is throw rocks and shoot bullets from behind. “
She further said,
My father was an amazing man who served Kashmir and the region of Kashmir. His body is gone, but his spirit is alive. Criminals have opened the gates of hell for themselves. “
Speaking about her family, Shraddha said,
I am an associate professor. I started from scratch; my father started with a bike, my brother was a famous diabetes specialist, my mother sat in the shop – that’s what Makhan Lal Bindroo built for us. A Kashmiri Pandit who never dies. Despite being a Hindu, I have read the Quran. The Qur’an says you can kill the body and the spirit lives on. Bindroo will stay mentally alive. “
