Richard Speck was born on December 6, 1941, into a religious family in Kirkwood, Illinois, where he was the seventh of eight children. After Spike’s father died when he was six years old, his mother remarried and the family moved to Dallas, Texas. The children suffered considerable abuse at the hands of a drunken stepfather, and Spike’s childhood was marked by juvenile delinquency and alcoholism, which soon led to petty crime.
In November 1962, Spike married Shirley Malone, and they had a daughter, Bobby Lynn, shortly after. Their marital happiness was short-lived, however, and in 1963 Speck’s resumption of typing landed him a prison sentence for theft and check fraud. After being released on parole in January 1965, he was out for only 4 weeks before being arrested again for aggravated assault and sentenced to 16 months in prison, of which he served 6 months.
Eight student nurses killed
At 11:00 p.m. on July 13, 1966, Speck broke into a townhouse at 2319 E. 100th St, located near Jeffrey’s Estate in Chicago; the townhouse was used as a dormitory for student nurses. He killed Gloria Davey, Patricia Matusek, Nina Jo Schmeier, Pamela Wilkening, Suzanne Faris, Mary Ann Jordan, Melita Gargulo and Valentina Passion. Spike, who later claimed to be both intoxicated and drugged, may have initially planned a routine burglary. Spike locked the women in a room for hours, took them out one by one, stabbed or strangled each one, and finally raped and strangled his last victim, Gloria David . A woman named Corazon Amurao escaped death by crawling under the bed when Speck was not in the room. Spike may not have counted, or may know that there are eight women living in the townhouse, but not a ninth woman who is spending the night. Amurao remained hidden until 6am, and fingerprints found at the scene matched Speck’s.
Two days after the murder, Spike was recognized by a homeless man named Claude Lunsford. On the evening of July 15, Spike, Lunsford and another man were drinking on the fire escape of the Starr Hotel at 617 West Madison. On July 16, Lunsford recognized the killer’s sketch in the evening paper and called police after finding Spark in his (Lunsford) room at the Starr Hotel at 9.30pm. However, police did not respond to the call, although their records show the call was made. Spike then attempted suicide and the front desk clerk at the Starr Hotel made an emergency call around midnight.
Speck was taken to Cook County Hospital at 12:30 a.m. on July 17. In the hospital, Speck was recognized by Dr. LeRoy Smith, a 25-year-old surgical resident who had read Born to Hell. Tattoos in newspaper stories. The police were called. Spike was arrested. Concerns that the recent Miranda case left the convictions of some offenders pending meant Speck was not even questioned for three weeks after his arrest.

Relatives refused to claim his body, and county coroner Duane Krieger said it will be cremated today and the remains are buried quietly near the prison where Speck once said he loved and considered home. Spike was a 24-year-old homeless man when he broke into a residence near the School of Nursing at South Chicago Community Hospital late at night on July 14, 1966. But Richard Spike survivors tied them up with sheets and took them one by one to other rooms, killing them.

She later climbed onto the building’s windowsill and screamed, “They’re all dead 3/8 of my friends are dead 3/8 of my God, I’m the only one alive.” The following year in Piori Ya, the jury deliberated just 49 minutes away from Speck’s guilt. Ms. Amurao has since married Albert Atienza, a real estate salesman, and lives in Arlington, Virginia.
