Padma Shri winner Naina Lal Kidwai is a renowned Indian investment and retail banker whose journey has resulted in many firsts. She is the former CEO and chairman of HSBC India – the first lady country head of foreign banks. The chartered accountant was the first Indian woman to graduate from Harvard Business School in 1982. Ms Kidwai also achieved the feat of becoming the first Indian female president of the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI). Before joining the banking industry, Naina worked at PricewaterhouseCoopers (now PricewaterhouseCoopers), becoming the first of three female employees in the firm. Kidwai and her husband also founded the NGO Indian Sanitation Coalition (ISC) in 2015. Through ISC, she works to address issues such as water, sanitation and hygiene.

Naina Lal Kidwai was born in 1957 (Age 64; as of 2021) in Delhi. Raised mainly in Delhi and Mumbai, Naina completed her studies at a boarding school in Shimla, Loreto Monastery from 1968 to 1973. There, she specialized in science and mathematics. She studied at Mrs Shriram College, Delhi University from 1974 to 1977 with a BA (Hons) in Economics. Shortly after graduation, Kidwai enrolled at the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Delhi to study Chartered Accounting. She then flew to the United States in 1980 to pursue an MBA at Harvard Business School (HBS) in Massachusetts.

I’m sure the deals I’ve worked on in the US will be bigger – billions not millions – but in India there are many firsts – company listings, new entrepreneurs and the start of privatisation. “

Morgan Stanley India
After leaving Anz Grindlays Bank, Naina joined Morgan Stanley India in 1994 as Head of Investment Banking. Under her leadership, Morgan Stanley became one of India’s foremost investment banks. During her tenure at the bank until 2002, the investment banker was instrumental in the creation of Idea Cellular, a tripartite joint venture (JV) between AT&T, Birla and Tata. She also oversaw the listing of Wipro on the New York Stock Exchange, raised funds for Infosys, and managed the notable IPOs of Maruti Udyog and Bharti Tele-Ventures. Nana recalled,

Ms Kidwai joined the UK bank in 2002 as Deputy Chairman and Managing Director of HSBC Securities and Capital Markets in India before being appointed Group Managing Director of the bank in 2006. The following year, Naina became chief executive of HSBC India in 2007, and within two years, the banker became the first woman and second in Indians in charge of foreign banks in India made history. As head of the bank, Naina manages all of the bank’s entities in India and works under her with nearly 12% of the group’s global employee base. Kidwai leads diversity at HSBC Indiaβββ and helps transform the workplace into a gender-friendly organization. She also introduced a number of initiatives at the bank, including paternity leave, extended maternity leave, flexible working hours, five days a week, time off, after-get off work yoga, parenting and salsa classes. Naina set benchmarks of excellence during her more than ten-year tenure at the UK bank, ending Asia Pacific in December 2015 following her announcement of her retirement from the role of Chairman of HSBC India and Executive Director of HSBC’s Board of Directors. Ms Kidwai’s post-retirement plans include initiatives including women’s empowerment, sanitation and water. She plans energy efficiency work with NGOs such as Water.org and the Gates Health Foundation, as well as the Council on the Global Economy and Climate. She said in an interview,
At retirement age, it was time for me to turn to a different pursuit. I intend to devote more time to women’s empowerment, water and sanitation, which I have engaged in in various capacities over the past decade. “
Naina Lal Kidwai also expressed her ambition to mentor young talent during her retirement. she says,
I hope to mentor some young people, especially women, in their careers, inspiring women to work hard and achieve…and work with those who are underrepresented. “

TERI Sexual Harassment Scandal
In 2016, Naina Lal Kidwai was criticized by survivors of sexual harassment and some TERI employees for her apparent statement in support of the defendants in the Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) sexual harassment case. Kidwai was one of TERI’s board members at the time, and the accused was TERI’s Director General, RK Pachauri. Kidwai said many of TERI’s female employees supported Pachauri, and their senior team had asked to bring back “those who were assessed”.
