Koena Mitra completed her studies at South Point School in Kolkata. She later completed a Masters in Psychology at Lady Brabourne College, Calcutta. She took a short course in filmmaking at the Lee Strasberg Theater and Film Academy in Los Angeles.

- In 2019, Poonam Sethi filed a lawsuit against Koena, alleging that Koena borrowed money from Poonam but did not return it. Koena gave Poonam a cheque of Rs. 300,000 rebounded in the bank. Later, Poonam sent Koena a legal notice, but Koena did not respond. After hearing the case, the Metropolitan Court found Koena guilty and sentenced her to 6 months of simple imprisonment, including Rs 5 million. $464,000, including the interest portion of $164,000 she had to pay to Poonam. According to Koena, the case was completely bogus and she was framed.
