Jon Hamm is an American actor best known for playing the fictional advertising agency Don Draper in the “Mad Men” series set in the 1970s. Hamm started out as a struggling actor who found it difficult to get enough work because his appearance suggested he was older than his age. Jonathan Daniel Hamm was born on March 10, 1971 in St. Louis, Missouri. His father, Daniel Hamm, owned a family trucking company, and his mother, Deborah, was a secretary. Hamm has two siblings. An older sister named Jennifer Hinzer and a younger sister named Julie Schulte.
When Hamm was only two years old, his parents divorced. He lived with his mother in St. Louis County in Cliff Cole, Missouri, until she died of colon cancer when Hamm was 10 years old. Hamm then went to live with his father in Clayton, Missouri. His father died when he was 20 years old.
Hamm’s first acting role in first grade was Winnie the Pooh. Later, at the age of 16, he was chosen to play Judas in the play “Godspell”.
Hamm attended the John Burroughs School in Radu, Missouri. During this time, he was a member of the football, swimming and baseball teams. He attended the University of Texas in 1989. He is a member of the Upsilon chapter of the Sigma Nu fraternity. He then left the University of Texas for the University of Missouri. While at the University of Missouri, he successfully auditioned for the production of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” after responding to an ad.
Hamm taught eighth-grade acting at his high school after earning a BA in English literature in 1993. To break away from a traditional career, he moved to Los Angeles in 1995 with his car and $150.
Hamm’s reps and agents at William Morris Agency terminated his status as a client because he hadn’t been offered any acting work in three years and he appeared to be older than his age.
During this time, to support himself, he served at the dinner table and worked as a set designer for adult films. Eventually frustrated by the lack of work, he made his 30th birthday the deadline for him to enter the industry.

Jon Hamm was cast in 2000 as romantic firefighter Burt Ridley in the NBC-produced series “Providence.” His original one-episode contract was extended to 19 years. This enabled him to quit his job as a waiter.
He made his debut in 2000 in Clint Eastwood’s space adventure film Space Cowboy. Hamm’s character has only one line in the entire film.
He then landed roles in the 2001 film “Kissing Jessica Stein” and the 2002 war drama “We Were Soldiers”.
