Jimmy Dean (August 10, 1928 – June 13, 2010) was an American country music singer, television host, actor, and businessman. He is the founder of the Jimmy Dean sausage brand and the face of its TV commercials. He began his career as a national television personality on CBS in 1957. He rose to fame with his 1961 country crossover to rock and roll, and his 1963 TV series The Jimmy Dean Show brought puppeteer Jim Henson his national media debut.
His acting career included appearances in the early seasons of the Daniel Boone TV series as a sidekick to the famous Frontiersmen played by star Faith Parker. He later played billionaire Willard White on the big screen and had a supporting role in the James Bond film “Diamonds Forever” (1971). He lives near Richmond, Virginia, and was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2010, although he died that year at the age of 81.

Jimmy Dean was born in Plainview, Hale County, West Texas in 1928, the son of George Otto Dean and his second wife, former Ruth Taylor. Ruth taught Jimmy to play the piano from an early age. He attributes his interest in music to Seth Ward Baptist Church. After serving in the U.S. Air Force in the late 1940s, he dropped out of high school to become a professional entertainer. In 1950, when he married his first wife, Mary Sue, Dean was 22 years old and just beginning his acting career.
Jimmy Dean studied at Brentwood Public Schools in Los Angeles, but soon attended McKinley Elementary School in Santa Monica. After moving to Fairmount, he attended Fairmount High School, graduating in 1949. After moving to California to live with his father again, he began taking pre-law courses at Santa Monica College. However, he transferred to UCLA for a semester and decided to switch to majoring in theatre. Jimmy Dean was sworn in as a Sigma Nu sorority at UCLA, but dropped out in 1951 before being launched. He also learned how to perform under the direction of Lee Strasberg at the historic Actors Studio in New York City.
