During the 1857 rebellion, Jharkari played a key role as advisor to the Queen of Jhansi. Jhalkari’s endurance kept her standing in the battle of Jhansi, saving her country and her beloved queen. She was as brave as the Queen herself, and she fought stubbornly against British troops during the uprising during the First Revolution in 1857.
In 1857, General Hugh Ross attacked the city of Jhansi to end the rebellion that began in Meerut. He captured the Jhansi fortress and killed anyone who tried to escape. During this period, Jalkali battles were fierce, covering the entire area from “Dantia Gate” to the Jhansi fortress “Unau Gate”. Lakshmibai had to leave the fort in order to seek help from Gwalior, but the British army surrounded the palace and could not escape. In this case, Jhalkari Bai helps Lakshmibai escape from the fort through the Bhanderi gate while posing as the queen to deceive the British. This confused the British army, and Lakshmibai escaped until they realized it was Jhalkari Bai.
When Jalkali heard the news of her husband’s death, she became fierce and attacked the British as a “wounded tigress”. It is said that while fighting against the British disguised as Lakshmi Bai, a British informant recognized her and tried to expose her.
