Profession
before amazon
- Jeff Bezos held various positions after graduating cum laude from Princeton University, eventually joining DE Shaw & Co, a New York investment firm, in 1990.
- Bezos was quickly promoted to the company’s youngest senior vice president, researching Internet investment opportunities. The enormous potential of web usage, growing at a rate of more than 2000% per year, sparked his business imagination.
Amazon
- Bezos left DE Shaw in 1994 to create a virtual bookstore in Seattle, Washington. Jeff started building website software called Amazon with a small group of employees in his family’s garage.
- Amazon quickly rose to the top of the e-commerce world. The user-friendly site is open 24 hours a day and encourages visitors to write original book reviews, as well as offer discounts, personalized recommendations and searches for out-of-print books.
- In 1999, Bezos expanded the site’s capabilities by adding auctions and investing in additional virtual retailers.
- Amazon’s success has prompted other merchants, including major book chains, to open online storefronts.
- Jeff Bezos realized the need to expand as more businesses scrambled for Internet funding, and by 2005 Amazon was selling everything from consumer electronics to fashion and hardware.
- In 2006, Amazon increased its diversification with the launch of Amazon Web Services (AWS), another cloud computing business that has grown into the world’s largest.
- In late 2007, Amazon introduced the Kindle, an online book reader with wireless Internet access that allows consumers to buy, install, read and save a large number of books on demand.
- In 2010, Amazon reported that Kindle book sales had surpassed hardcover sales. With its Amazon Studios branch, Amazon began producing its own TV series and movies that same year.
- Amazon’s annual net sales grew from $510,000 in 1995 to $600 million in 1998, and from $19.1 billion in 2008 to nearly $233 billion in 2018. AWS accounted for more than half of the company’s 2018 operating profit.
- Two years later, Amazon posted record profits, hitting the $100 billion mark in sales in the fourth quarter of that year. The staggering numbers are due in part to an increase in home purchases during the COVID-19 pandemic.
- Jeff Bezos said in February 2021 that he would step down as CEO later that year. However, he does want to stay on as Amazon’s executive chairman.
blue origin
- Bezos started a human spaceflight company called Blue Origin in September 2000. Bezos has long been interested in spaceflight and the evolution of human existence throughout the solar system.
- Bezos claimed in 2015 that he was working on an orbital launch vehicle that would launch for the first time in the late 2010s. Blue Origin’s New Shepard spacecraft successfully launched into space in November, reaching a test altitude of 329,839 feet, before landing vertically at its launch facility in west Texas.
- Since 2016, he has been open about his solar system population plans and ambitions. He has begun selling $1 billion a year in Amazon stock to fund Blue Origin’s operations.
- Jeff Bezos said in 2018 that the core purpose of Blue Origin is to be more focused on protecting Earth’s natural resources by transforming humans into a multi-planetary species.
Washington post
- On August 5, 2013, Bezos announced the acquisition of The Washington Post for $250 million in cash.
- Bezos began transforming the newspaper company into a media and technology company in January 2016, rebuilding its digital media, digital applications and analytics tools.
- The paper turned a profit in 2016 for the first time since Bezos bought it in 2013, thanks to an increase in online reading.
