In April 2007, Khashoggi took on Al Watan’s editor-in-chief for the second time and was fired again in 2010 after the publication of a column by poet Ibrahim al-Almaee that challenged Salafi’s basic premise. The announcement from Al Watan stated,
Khashoggi resigned as editor-in-chief to focus on his personal projects. “
Khashoggi maintained ties to Saudi Arabia’s elite, including those in its intelligence services. Political Views
Jamal Khashoggi rejected Saudi Arabia’s stance on Wahhabism and said Arabs should find a way for Islam and secularism to coexist. According to Jamal,
Saudi Arabia should return to its pre-1979 climate when the government curbs the hard-line Wahhabi tradition. Women today deserve the same rights as men. All citizens should have the right to express their opinions without fear of imprisonment. The Saudis have to find a way to accommodate secularism and Islam like they have in Turkey. What the Arab world needs most is freedom of speech. A free press in the Arab world, independent of national governments, will develop so that ordinary people in the Arab world will be able to address the structural problems facing their societies. “
He has criticized the 2015 Saudi Arabia-led intervention in Yemen, the 2017 Saudi Arabia-led Qatari diplomatic crisis, the 2017 Lebanon-Saudi Arabia dispute, the 2018 Saudi Arabia-Canada diplomatic spat, the kingdom’s crackdown on dissent and the media, arrests for women’s rights Wait. Activists Loujain al-Hathloul, Eman al-Nafjan, Aziza al-Yousef and several others involved in women’s advocacy and anti-male guardianship movements. He has repeatedly criticized the policies of Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman on several fronts. In an article for The Washington Post, he wrote,
Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, known by his initials MBS, said any public opposition to Saudi domestic policy, even such as the punitive arrest of Saudi women seeking reforms, was appalling policies are not tolerated. While MBS was right to liberate Saudi Arabia from ultra-conservative religious power, he was wrong to promote a new activism that, while seemingly freer and more attractive to the West, is equally incapable of Tolerate dissent. The reckless actions of MBS are deepening tensions and undermining the security of the Gulf states and the entire region. “
He also criticized Egypt’s Abdel Fattah al-Sisi government after organizing a military coup to oust President Mohamed Morsi in 2013. According to him,
Egypt, which has imprisoned 60,000 opposition members, also deserves criticism. Although US President Barack Obama declared his support for democracy and change in the Arab world after the Arab Spring, then-President Barack Obama did not take a hard line and refused to oppose President-elect Mohammed Morsi’s coup. As we know, the coup brought the military back to power in the largest Arab country – with tyranny, repression, corruption and mismanagement. “
Khashoggi criticizes Shiite sectarianism in Iran. In a 2016 article, he wrote,
Iran views the region, especially Syria, from a sectarian perspective. The militias that Tehran relies on, some from as far away as Afghanistan, are sectarian. They have attacked Syrian villages with sectarian slogans, bringing to life the conflict from more than a thousand years ago. With blood and sectarianism, Iran is redrawing the map of the region. “
