Henry Winkler was born on October 30, 1945 on Manhattan’s West Side, the son of housewife Ilsa Anne Marie (née Hadra) and lumber import and export company president Harry Irving Winkler . His parents, German Jews, immigrated to the United States from Berlin on the eve of World War II in 1939. Winkler said his parents came to the U.S. on a six-week business trip but knew they would never go back.
His father smuggled the family’s only remaining asset (family jewelry disguised as a box of chocolates tucked under his arm). Although they were not kosher, Winkler was raised in a conservative Jewish tradition. He said he was not as religious as an adult.
