In 1986, she founded the Weigh Down Workshop, a series designed to guide people away from bad behaviors and emotions such as anger, depression, overeating and drinking, and channel their energy into a true relationship with God. Through her workshops, she inspires people towards a faith-based diet. After attending her workshop, her followers claim that once-obese people have lost extra pounds, alcoholics have stopped drinking, and depressed souls experience real joy. People even say that after learning ethics in the workshop and putting it into practice, their finances have recovered and their marital problems have been cured. When the local church heard about Gwen’s teachings and their surprising results, they started asking Laura to hold a weighing workshop class on their premises.
Founded Remnant Fellowship Church
Gwen founded Remnant Fellowship Church in 1999 to ensure that God’s people are cared for. Initially, a handful of people gathered in the shipping department behind the weigh-in building in Franklin, Tennessee. They come together every day to dedicate themselves to teaching the word God and prayer. In 2002, Shamblin purchased 40 acres of land in Brentwood, Tennessee, and built a church building there. The church building was completed in 2004. Slowly, the membership started to grow and people from all over the world became its members. Its membership has grown to more than 150 churches in the United States, Canada, Europe, Africa and Australia.

- Laura creates controversy when she investigates the death of an 8-year-old boy named Joseph Smith. His parents reportedly claimed they used corporal punishment on their children because it was endorsed by Laura’s Fellowship of the Dead church.
- When Laura taught that the doctrine of the Trinity was unbiblical, she got into controversy. She believes that Jesus Christ is not God, but the Son of God. Thomas Nelson Publishers canceled the publication of her book “Exodus” following her statement. Later, Gwen wrote a letter to her followers clarifying her claims. she wrote,

On May 29, 2021, a private jet (Cessna 501) carrying Gwen Shamblin Lara, her husband Joe Lara, her son-in-law Brandon Hannah and four other church leaders to Palm Beach, Florida crashed in Percy Priest Lake near Smyrna, Tennessee. Human remains were found at the crash site, where all seven people are thought to have died.
In addition to Laras, others killed in the crash included Jennifer J. Martin, David L. Martin, Jessica Walters, Jonathan Walters and Brandon Hannah.
