George Perry Floyd, an African American, died in police custody on May 25, 2020, during an encounter in South Minneapolis. George Floyd was born on Sunday, October 14, 1973 (Age 46; at the time of death) in Fayetteville, North Carolina, Floyd grew up in Houston’s Third Ward, one of the city’s predominantly black neighborhoods where most of his family members still live. He attended Jack Yates High School in the Third District of Houston, Texas. During his time at Yates High School, he became a key basketball and football player for the school’s team. Floyd also attended South Florida Community College, but left.
After struggling to find work in Houston, George left the city for Minneapolis around 2018. While in Minneapolis, he worked as a truck driver and later as a bodyguard at Conga Latin Bistro, a popular Latin American restaurant. Earlier, he worked as a security guard at the Salvation Army Harbor Lights homeless shelter in downtown Minneapolis in late 2017 and early 2018. George Floyd lost his job as a bouncer at the Congaradin Bistro during the COVID-19 pandemic, when Minnesota’s governor issued a stay-at-home order to curb the spread of the virus. Floyd’s lifelong friend Christopher Harris said in an interview that after George lost his job, he advised George to contact a temporary employment agency. As Harris said, he said—

On the evening of May 25, 2020, from approximately 8:8 to 8:28 p.m., Minneapolis police arrested Floyd for mistaking Floyd for trying to be in Minneapolis man buying cigarettes in a store counterfeiting $20 bills. A video of his arrest showed Floyd on the ground with his hands handcuffed behind his back. Officer Derek Chauvin was seen putting his knee on Floyd’s neck while Floyd complained that he couldn’t breathe. Chauvin reportedly put his knee on Floyd’s neck for 8 minutes and 46 seconds.
At the end of the video, paramedics are seen carrying a limp Floyd onto a stretcher before taking him to an ambulance. Later, his autopsy report revealed no physical findings to support his death from traumatic asphyxiation or strangulation. The autopsy report mentioned several underlying health conditions, including coronary artery disease and hypertensive heart disease.
Aftermath and arrest of police officers
On May 26, 2020, the officers involved in the arrest and encounter of George Floyd were put on leave. All four officers (Derek Michael Chauvin, Tou Thao, Thomas K. Lane and J. Alexander Kueng) were fired later in the day. On the same day, the FBI announced a review of the incident. Civil rights attorney Benjamin Crump came forward to represent Floyd’s family.
On May 28, 2020, the U.S. Department of Justice and the FBI issued a joint statement making the investigation into Floyd’s death a “top priority.” They said in a statement,

On May 29, 2020, Derek Chauvin became the first white police officer in Minnesota to be arrested for the death of a black civilian. On April 20, 2021, Chauvin was handcuffed and taken into custody immediately after the 12 jury considered 45 witnesses, including bystanders, police officers and medical experts; after the verdict was read.
