Achyutananda Samanta was born on Wednesday 20 January 1965 (54; same as 2019), in Kalara Banka, Katak, Odisha. His zodiac sign is Aquarius and his nickname is Sukuta. After completing his primary education at a nearby school, Achyuta started attending Raghunathpur High School, 8 kilometers from his village, which he used to walk 8 kilometers to reach the school. He graduated from SCS College in Puri, Odisha, and went on to pursue a master’s degree. He obtained his PhD in Chemistry from Utkar University, Bhubaneswar, Odisha, and later, he completed his PhD in Social Sciences.
Family, Caste and Wife
Achyuta was born into a poor family in Kalarabanka. His father, Anadi Charan Samanta, died in a train accident when Achyuta was four years old. After the incident, the family moved from Jamshedpur to Kalara Banka in their hometown of Cuttack. His mother’s name was Nilema Rani Samantha. He has six siblings, the youngest sister is the famous Indian writer Itti Samantha. During his childhood, Achyuta and his family spent many days starving because they had no money to buy food. He was a bachelor and devoted his life to social causes.
Profession
After his father died, he faced serious financial problems. In order to support his family, he started doing chores in the village. With the usual hardships, he completed his master’s degree. After that, he started teaching at a private university and taking private tutoring classes. In 1992-93, he founded his two academic institutions, Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) and Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS), in a rental apartment. 5000. He borrowed money from family and friends to run the academy, in 1994-95 his loans were up to Rs. 2.5 million. He worked hard to run these colleges and became one of the most famous educational institutions in India.
KISS was established to provide underprivileged children with free education from kindergarten to post-graduation, with free accommodation and boarding facilities. Later, he founded many other Kalinga institutes including Kalinga Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS), KIIT School of Management (KSOM), KIIT School of Rural Management (KSRM), KIIT School of Computer Applications (KSCA).
He has also been a member of various national and international educational institutions including University Grants Council (UGC), Executive Committee Member of All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), New York City Institute of International Education (IIE), University of Asia Pacific (AUAP) and Asia Pacific University Mobility (UMAP) Bangkok.

- He is a motivational speaker and has given over 100 lectures in various colleges and institutes.
- As the youngest chancellor of any university in India, his name is recorded in the “Linka Record”.
- When the interviewer asked him what was the most satisfying aspect of his job, he said,
The most satisfying aspect of my journey has been my ability to use education as a tool for personal, social, cultural development; economic empowerment; and creating a multitude of change agents for poor and marginalized communities. The model has been admired by world leaders, policy planners, Nobel laureates, legal luminaries. KISS has been an eye-opener. It was especially reassuring when KISS was granted Special Consultative Status with the United Nations Organization.
- In 2018-19, he was elected as Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament and in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, he ran from Kandhamal constituency and won with Biju Janata Dal votes.
- He turned his hometown “Kalarabanka” (a village) into a smart village.
- Some of the well-known students of Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS) are Dutee Chand (Indian athlete) and Sumitra Naik (Under 19 Indian Rugby team captain).
