Dan Barry is an American journalist, longtime reporter and columnist for The New York Times. He joined the paper in September 1995. Before joining The New York Times, he worked for the Providence Journal in Rhode Island. There, he was a member of its investigative team, winning the George Polk Prize in 1992 for a series of articles on the causes of the National Bank crisis.

In 1999, he was diagnosed with cancer at the Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. Dan said he started with six rounds of chemotherapy, each requiring a five-day hospital stay. The nurse hung bags of clear, innocent-looking fluid from an infusion pole, found a plump vein in his right arm, and the mist slowly dissipated. After chemotherapy, radiation and a few weeks to calm things down, his doctors declared him cancer-free in February 2000.
However, in late spring 2004, the cancer returned. Dan returned to Sloan Kettering for more chemotherapy and radiation, repeating the previous process. Afterwards, he had a major surgery, which provided an exclamation point for everything the chemotherapy had done. Once again he was declared cancer-free. He has not had another cancer recurrence and is currently in good health.

Some of these awards include the Society of Newspaper Editors’ Deadline Reporting Award, coverage of the first anniversary of the September 11 bombings, the 2005 Mike Berger Award from Columbia University’s School of Journalism, and the 2015 Narrative Award for America’s Best Newspaper. Dan is also an author and has written several bestselling books.
