Shanann’s former friend and colleague Nickole Utoft Atkinson dropped her home from the airport on the morning of August 13, 2018.
Later that day, Nickole became concerned because Shanann had missed her business meeting, her OB-GYN appointment, and Shanann had not even responded to her messages. Nickole went to Shanann’s house at 12.10pm and no one answered the doorbell. Nickel contacted Chris, who was already at work, and then called the Frederick Police Department. At about 1.40pm, an officer came to his home for a welfare check. Chris also arrived and allowed the police to search his home. Shanann and his daughters went missing during a welfare check. Searchers later found Shanann’s wallet, which contained her phone and keys, her car in the garage, and wedding rings found on the couple’s bed. The next day, the FBI and the Colorado Bureau of Investigation joined the investigation. Initially, Chris told police that he did not know where his daughter and wife were, and that he hadn’t seen his wife since he left for work at 5.15am on the 13th. He has given numerous media interviews and seen him begging for the safe return of his wife and daughter. Chris said in an interview,
Shanann, Bella, Celeste, come back if you’re outside. If anyone has her, bring her back. I need to see everyone. “

He was fired the same day he was arrested. Authorities recovered the body on 16 August. He later pleaded guilty to killing his pregnant wife and daughter in a police interview. After Chris was arrested for murdering his wife (his mistress), Nicole Kessinger went to the Colorado Bureau of Investigation and told them that she thought Chris was about to divorce his wife. she says,
