Chantal Compagnon was born in 1945 (Age 76; as of 2021) into a conservative Catholic family in Paris.

She met Charles at a party in 1969, and Charles told her about his adventures in the Orient and Dakar, and about his fictional wealthy family in Saigon. At the time, Charles was dating Chantal Desnoyes. He broke up with Desnoyers and married Compagnon. Soon, Charles proposed to Chantal, but on the same day he was arrested for car theft. Chantal’s parents opposed her marriage to Charles, but agreed after Charles showed the wealth he had accumulated through a series of scams. Eight months later, Charles was released from prison and married her.
In 1970, Compagnon and Sobhraj, who were pregnant, left France for Asia using false documents. Along the way, Chantal helps Charles rob tourists. When the couple arrived in Mumbai in 1970, they decided to start over on the criminal path. However, Charles failed to distance himself from crime and became involved in auto theft and smuggling businesses. Compagnon gave birth to her first child there, a daughter named Usha Sobhraj, who was later sent to live with her parents in Chantal. In 1971, Chantal and Charles fled to Kabul, where Charles dealt with arms smugglers. Chantal and Charles escape from place to place together. In 1973, Charles was arrested and jailed for an unsuccessful armed robbery of a jewellery shop at the Ashoka Hotel in Delhi, and he was held at Tihar Prison in Delhi. Two weeks later, when Charles was rushed to the hospital feigning appendicitis, Chantal helped him escape by drugging the guards. The couple then moved to Kabul. Chantal accompanies Charles on his misdemeanor and helps him rob travelers on the hippie trail between Europe and East Asia. The couple were arrested by Afghan police and jailed. Charles somehow managed to escape and went to France, kidnapped his daughter and returned to Afghanistan to free Chantal. In the process, he was caught again. After his release, Charles traveled to Iran, leaving Chantal and his daughter in Kabul. After the incident, Chantal returned to France and promised to cut ties with Charles and never contact him again.
Facts/trivia
- Judging by his relationship with Chantal Desnoyes, Charles has a daughter named Muriel Anuk and a son named Plank. In fact, Muriel Anouk was born on the day Charles married Compagnon.
- In Kabul, Chantal met an American and moved to the United States with him and her daughter, GQ magazine reported. In an interview with GQ, Charles claimed that when Chantal heard about his return to France in 1997, she left her husband to be with him.
- In a meeting with Farrukh Dhondy, an Indian-born British writer who had known Charles well, Chantal claimed that Sobraji had confessed to her murders and described them in detail. Dhondy shared his conversation with Chantal in an interview and said:
When she came back for him, Sobragi took her to the borders of France and Switzerland and forced her to sell some of the land she had inherited. She got around £40,000. He took it, got into the car, drove to Holland, and gambled. every penny. I asked her why she came back to him and she said ‘I love him. ‘”
- After Charles was convicted of murder in Nepal and sentenced to life in prison, Chantal appealed his double murder conviction and filed a case with the European Court of Human Rights in 2003, accusing the French government of refusing to help her husband Charles.
- In 2021, BBC One and Netflix are producing a series called “Vipers” about the life of Charles Sobraj. In the series, Chantal changed her name to “Juliet Walkland” and her character was played by British-French actress Stacey Martin.
