The journey of life
Obama’s father, Barack Obama, Sr., grew up in rural Kenya as a teenage shepherd who received a scholarship to study in the United States, eventually rising through the Kenyan government to become a senior economist. Obama’s mother, S. Ann Dunham, grew up in Kansas, Texas and Washington before settling with her family in Honolulu. She and Barack Sr. met during a Russian course at the University of Hawaii in 1960 and married less than a year later.
When Obama was two years old, Barack Sr. went to Harvard to study, and Ann and Barack Sr. separated not long after. Obama met his father again during a brief visit when he was ten years old. Ann eventually married again, this time to Lolo Soetoro, another international scholar from Indonesia, the father of her second child, Maya.
Obama has lived in Indonesia for many years with his half-sister, mom and stepfather. Obama visited a government-run institution where he received some Islamic education and a Catholic private school where he received a Christian education.

Obama attended Punahu School, a prestigious preparatory school in Honolulu, where he graduated in 1979.
Obama attended Occidental College in nearby Los Angeles for the next two years before transferring to Columbia University in New York City in 1983 to earn a bachelor’s degree in political science.
After several years as a writer and editor at Business International Corp., a Manhattan-based research, publishing and consulting firm, he moved to Chicago’s poorest Far South in 1985 to work as a community organizer. He returned to school shortly after, cum laude from Harvard Law School in 1991.
In 1989, Obama met Chicago native Michelle Robinson while working as a summer associate at the law firm Sidley in Chicago. They tied the knot in 1992.
Obama moved to Chicago after earning a law degree and then joined the Democratic Party. Project Vote is a voter registration effort that helped Democrat Bill Clinton win Illinois and the presidency in 1992, thanks to the registration of thousands of African Americans.
Elected to the Illinois Senate in 1996, he was instrumental in passing legislation to tighten campaign finance restrictions, provide health insurance for low-income families, and revise criminal justice and welfare laws. Obama won about 53 percent of the popular vote and 365 electoral votes in the 2008 election. On January 20, 2009, hundreds of thousands of people gathered in Washington, D.C., to watch Obama become president.
