Ramkishin Yadav (Baba Ramdev’s real name) was born on Saturday, December 25, 1965 (Age: 55 as of 2020) in a village called Said Alipur in Mahendragarh, East Punjab (now Haryana), India. His father, Ram Nivas Yadav, was a farmer. According to his parents, he was not very talkative as a child. He never quarrels and is content. He received his primary education in his hometown until grade 8, after which he joined gurukul to study Sanskrit and yoga. He was a student of Acharya Baldev Ji of Gurukul Kalwa and studied yoga from Guru Karanvir of Arya Samaji. He used to learn from second-hand books and was always the first in the class. He would keep books so clean that he could sell them above market price. During his childhood, he suffered a paralysis that affected the left side of his body. He credits yoga for its miraculous healing.

After following the ascetic lifestyle, Ramdev took “Sanyasi Diksha” and adopted the name Swami Ramdev of Swami Shankar Dev Ji. While living in Kalwa Gurukul in Kinder, Haryana, he started offering free yoga classes to villagers. Later, he moved to Haridwar, Uttarakhand. In Haridwar, he entered Gurukul Kangri Vishwavidyalaya and practiced meditation and self-discipline. In 1995, he founded the Divya Yog Mandir Trust. In 2003, Aastha TV started featuring him during its morning yoga sessions.
Gradually, he became popular. Many celebrities such as Amitabh Bachchan and Shilpa Shetty have also taught yoga from him.
He made yoga popular in the US, UK, Japan and other countries. He also spoke at the Muslim Clergy Congress in Dioband, Uttar Pradesh. In 2006, at the invitation of the then UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, he delivered a speech on poverty alleviation at the UN conference. In the same year, he founded “Patanjali Yogpeeth” in Haridwar, Uttarakhand, which is considered the largest Ayurveda and Yoga center in the world with a capacity of around 6,000 people.
For a long time, he became the face of Patanjali Ayurveda Ltd., which he co-founded with his colleague Acharya Balkrishna. Under their leadership, Patanjali Ayurveda has been one of the highest earning FMCG (fast moving consumer goods) in India.
