Anna Hakobyan is the wife of the 16th Prime Minister of Armenia, Nikol Pashinyan, and the editor-in-chief of the well-known Armenian daily Haykakan Zhamanak (“Times of Armenia”). She gained recognition after taking part in the 2018 Armenian Revolution, which led to the ouster of former Armenian Prime Minister Serzh Sarkisian and her husband, Nikol Pashinyan, to become Armenia’s new prime minister.

Anna Hakobyan was born on Wednesday, February 1, 1978 (Age 42; as of 2020) in Yerevan, Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic, Soviet Union (now the Republic of Armenia). From an early age, she aspired to be a professional journalist. So, in order to realize her ambition, she graduated from Yerevan University’s Department of Journalism in 1997. She has since taken various short courses at the American University of Armenia before returning to journalism in 2001. Before starting her journalism career in 2003, she received journalism training at local and international agencies to improve her journalism skills.

Even with four children, the couple, Anna Hakobyan and Nikol Pashinyan, didn’t officially marry until 2018. They were legally married on May 8, 2018, when Nikol Pashinyan was elected Prime Minister of Armenia. They have four children together – three daughters, Mariam, Shushan and Apri, and a son, Ashot Pashinyan (born 2000), currently serving in the Armenian army.

From 2003 to 2008, she worked as a journalist at Haykakan Zhamanakβ (The Times of Armenia). Later, after Nikol Pashinyan (former editor-in-chief) was imprisoned, she took over as editor-in-chief of the paper on an interim basis. After the violence in the Armenian protests in 2008 For political reasons, he officially became the editor-in-chief of The Times of Armenia in 2013 and has held that position since.

After Nikol Pashinyan was elected Prime Minister of Armenia in 2018, she launched two charitable foundations, the “My Footsteps” Foundation and the “City of Smiles” Foundation. The “My Step” Foundation works to improve Armenia in five main areas: society, education, health, culture and environment. On the other hand, the “City of Smiles” foundation was launched to provide professional support services for children and adolescents to overcome cancer.

She is also an ambassador for the Armenian peace movement “Women for Peace”, which aims to promote peace and harmony between Azerbaijan and Armenia, as well as a peaceful settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh region dispute between the two countries. The movement is completely apolitical in nature. After launching the campaign, she said,
Women can unite, speak out, and work for peace so that there will be no more shootings on the Armenia-Azerbaijan and Artsakh-Azerbaijan borders, with no casualties on both sides, until the conflict is resolved by both governments and leaders. “
Facts/trivia
- Since she started working in journalism, she has been active in various political and public events and has been talking about social issues in Armenia. She also participated in Armenia’s Velvet Revolution in 2018, led by her husband Nikol Pashinyan, a member of the Armenian Parliament at the time.
- In October 2020, during the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, she received military training along with 12 other women in the class to join the Armenian armed forces fighting against Azerbaijan in the Karabakh border area.
