Bill and I went for a walk on the beach, and Bill told me, “If I really squint, I can see my way and make $500 million.” In 1984, no software company had ever made $100 million. Bill was a huge influence on me, and I was like, wow, can you really build a company that big in the software industry? are you kidding me? I remember asking him to take a stick or a rock and draw numbers on the beach for me. How does he get there? And then he said, “What bothers me is that I don’t see how I’m going to get past $500 million.” And I thought, ‘Are you bothered by that? I’m glad someone can figure out a way to get to $500 million. There was a lot of inspiration between each other back then because there was so little collective intelligence. “
