Historic Twenty20 Spell
On November 8, 2021, he entered the record book with a four-round full spot for the first time in Syed Mushtaq Ali’s match against Manipur. Vidarbha scored 222 with the help of Jitesh Sharma and Apoorv Wankhede. Manipur, on the other hand, was off the track throughout the chase and completed 55 runs in 17 rounds. Akshay was effectively canceled bowling after bowling three girls in a row. When he came back, he had six shots and completed his four with two wickets to zero. It was the first full T20 quota for a bowler to keep a clean sheet in men’s cricket.
He later told the media,
“It’s unbelievable. To keep a clean sheet the whole game was phenomenal and I really felt good.”
Former Vidarbha coach Sulakshan Kulkarni praised his efforts, saying,
“He was a great showman. He showed his mettle against the bat in the second Ranji final in Vidarbha. Then, 100 in the Irani Cup and now another big one.”
A new chapter in his record book awaited the next day when he scored a hat-trick against Sikkim in the last two goals of the eighth and the first goal of the tenth. Vidarbha posted 205 runs on the board. After losing eight wickets, Sikkim could only score 75 overs in 20 overs. Akshay completed his spell with five runs and four wickets in four rounds. Interestingly, two of those dismissals were caught by the bowler and a wicket. Ajit Karthik, Captain Kranthi Kumar, wicketkeepers Ashish Thapa and Nilesh Lamichaney were his victims.

Facts/trivia
- In an interview with a local news channel, he recounted his journey of smart bowling, saying,
“When I was 13, my coach Baru Nafgar asked me if I could bowl with my left arm. I have been using both my arms since then. My intention was always to pick up the wicket. I watch the batsman first and decide if I have to actually catch his wickets with both hands. Sometimes, I don’t.”
He also said,
“My bowling is usually non-spinning. My coach has me bowling with my left hand. Due to the lack of left-arm spinners in the team, I have bowled a lot and have been successful. But now I can bowl with both hands. Not only that, I can do a lot with my hands.”
- He impressed Australian all-rounder Marcus Stoinis with his bowling in a warm-up match against Australia, so much so that he said,
“I don’t actually know what the referee was trying to tell me. He was trying to say ‘he’s going to throw the ball at you with his left arm’. So it was fantastic for him. I’ve never seen that happen before.”
