Ajit Agarkar is a former Indian fast bowler who played for the Indian national team from 1998 to 2006 with Javagal Srinath, Zaheer Khan, Ashish Nehra. He has represented India in various formats such as ODIs, Tests and 20 Internationals (T20Is). He’s known for his steady run-ups that help generate enough speed to trouble batters with seam movement through the sides. Ajit Agarkar was born on Sunday 4th December 1977 (Age 44; as of 2021) in Mumbai (now Mumbai), Maharashtra. His zodiac sign is Sagittarius. He was a batsman during his childhood but switched to seam bowling when his father introduced him to Ramakant Achrekar. He made his cricket debut in the under-16 team’s interscholastic Giles Shield tournament and scored three centuries. Soon, he made his Ranji debut in 1996/97. He made his ODI and Test debut in 1998. In 2006, he participated in the first T20I match between India and South Africa. He was involved in many of India’s historic victories, including a famous victory over Australia in 2003 after 22 years in their home country. In 2013, he retired from international cricket. After his retirement, he started working as a cricket analyst, chairman of the Mumbai senior selection committee, and then as a selector for the Indian national team.

His first breakthrough performance came at the Harris Shield Under-19 Championship, where he impressed cricket pundits with his batting and was named ‘the next Sachin’.
Soon, Mumbai Ranji will need an all-rounder. Knowing this, Ajit started to focus on bowling and in 1996/97 he was drafted into the Mumbai Ranji team against Gujarat.
That same year, he scored a century against Kumar Sangakkara’s Sri Lanka Under-19 team. Apart from that, he also represented India’s U-17 team against England’s U-17. In 1998, he made his debut in the ODI against Australia in April and then against Zimbabwe in the October Test. The ODI match was the first match of the Pepsi Triangle series, with India scoring 309 runs in the first innings. Australia responded when Ajit Agarkar sacked their opening batsman Adam Gilchrist, with the first wicket standing for a century. Gilchrist missed the line and eventually slid the ball towards where captain Azaruddin was standing. Agarkar finished his bowling with 31 overs with five overs and one wicket.
One of his top international bowling matches in Australia on December 12, 2003, during the second Test match of the Border Gavasca Trophy at the Adelaide Oval.
However, Ajit Agarkar as the ODI bowler was more successful than the Test bowler. He impressed the selection staff in his first international match, which prompted the national selection staff to give him more chances to play in the next bilateral series, against the New Zealanders on April 17, 1998. On July 25, 2002, there was a Test match between India and England at Lord. Ajit Agarkar scored a century and put his name on the Honour Roll as the ninth Indian batsman to score one hundred at Lord’s.
That same year, on November 6, Ajit Agarkar was third in the batsman’s run with 95 points against the West Indies. Nonetheless, India lost the match by four wickets. In 26 Test matches, he bowled 46 innings and scored 58 wickets, with an average of 47.32 bowls per wicket. Interestingly, 30 of those wickets were for Australia. 2003 was his most successful year with 16 wickets. 6-for-41 was his best bowling performance, against Australia in Adelaide in 2003-04. Overall, he has pitched 809.3 times and conceded 2,745 times with a 3.39 economy rating. When it comes to hitting the ball in his longest format, he’s averaging 571 points with a 16.79 average. He has captained Mohammad Azharuddin, Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid and Virender Sehwag.
Aside from the Test, he has also played 191 ODIs and won 288 wickets, with an average of 27.85 bowls per wicket. He has exactly 100 teenage girls in the ODI with an economy value of 5.07. His best bowling was 6-for-42 against Australia on 9 January 2004 in Melbourne, a loss. He has had two 5-wicket pulls and 10 10-wicket pulls. His most ODI wickets came from Sri Lanka (49), followed by Zimbabwe (45). - Ajit Agarkar has a very fascinating love story. He first met Fatima in 1998, when his friend brought her to his house. Fatima is his friend’s sister. During the 1999 East Africa Cricket World Cup, Fatima watched Ajit play again. There, they fell in love. However, being from a Muslim background, Fatima had a hard time convincing their parents, but they were both successful and in 2002, Agaka and Fatima tied the knot.
- Ajit Agarkar put on a great performance with a bat. So, at one point, Sachin Tendulkar gave Ajit his gloves as a reward. He recalled that moment saying,
“Sachin gave me gloves. We were at the same school and he thought someone was doing well, so he gave me gloves. I didn’t know him very well at the time. I didn’t use his pads if I did. , maybe I can be a better hitter.”
